cold oil is thicker, higher rpm=more pressure .factory guage is actually working like it should. if worried hook external guage on oil galley plug and check oil press.manually.

No that is not the pump that you smell. You need to have a test gauge hooked up to verify that you have good oil pressure, if it is ok then replace the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge.

What would cause no oil pressure

Clogged oil pump pick up screen, a stuck open pressure relief valve on oil pump, clogged oil passages. Verify gauge operation, unplug oil pressure sender , turn key on, have someone observe the gauge, for single wire, ground the lead to the engine block, gauge should go up. For two wire lead , jump the ends to each other.

My 2001 Ford Ranger Edge oil pressure gauge has been jumping around all over the place. Took it in today and they said pump needs replacing... and that they had to remove the engine to do so at the tune of...

Your oil pressure gauge works with the oil pressure sensor, which is screwed into the block, to transmit a reading. A faulty oil pressure sensor can cause the reading on the gauge to be erratic. You may have a bad oil pressure sensor. You should also inspect the wires going to the sender to make sure they are not loose, corroded, or shorted. If a new sending unit doesn't work, you can check the oil pressure with a manual pressure gauge. Testing for oil pressure involves fitting the oil pressure gauge with an adapter. Then you will need to determine if you have a gauge problem or an actual oil pressure problem.

You just need to find an older Repair shop that still has the old test gauges. Every so often the Onboard computers are replaced with more capable models. The connectors are different, so you need the proper old style diagnostic scanner.
You can still use the old style Vacuum gauge to diagnose some things and set the carburetor. You should have an electric/vacuum solenoid on the carburetor to compensate for the A/C running at idle. Someone may have disconnected it, or adjusted the idle speed missing the solenoid.
You do not want to have high idle rpm just because you have an A/C; its suppose to adjust when the A/C cycles off and on and maintain a stable idle.
That said, the oil pressure may be more steady at idle if the RPM is steady. Now for fluctuating oil pressure at high RPM, you may have a bad fit inside the oil pan with the oil pump pick-up tube. There are pressure relief springs in some oil pumps, oil filters have relief springs, and your oil pressure gauge may be wrong.
Oil pressure gauges are not a major expense, or even have a Mechanic hook up a test gauge temporarily to verify pressure.

Probably not, as oil pumps are usually "forever" , unless the oil changes are not done and the system plugs up.
I'd recommend you find a garage that will remove the oil pressure sending unit and screw in a real oil pressure gauge, and test it.
Oil pressure switches that screw into the block fail occasionally, and dashboard oil pressure gauges sometimes fail also.

Oil pressure is jumping from 20lbs to 0lbs,truck almost dies then the oil pressure jumps back up to 30lbs then back to 10lbs ,

To start, take the vehicle to a dealer and ask them to screw an oil pressure gauge into the block hole and check your oil pressure whilst idling and while driving it.
I have a 1993 and it does the same thing, but the problem is only the gauge itself.
If it is actually having such oil pressure fluctuations, you may have a defective pump, a clogged pump filter screen, or a clogged oil filter.

Sounds like you had better check your oil level before you have a knocking noise. If oil level is ok, change your oil pressure sender.

First make sure you have the proper oil level.
It's one of two things. The oil pressure switch or the oil pressure sender.
I think you can start with the pressure switch.

You try an analog oil pressure gauge on to test the oil pressure if you want to. That would
verify the oil pump/pickup.
