Have a Millermatic 200 wire welder! s/n:JJ048290!

Problem! When you go to touch the metal you are about to weld, the wire wouldn't even spark! Welder don't have the right hum to it either when turned on and when you contact the metal with the wire coming out the gun you don't have that contact sound or click to the machine! Checked the fuse's in the fuse box and they are ok! You can hear the machine when you first turn the switch on or off on the panel, but it just don't have the right sound to it like it did before!

Couple of items to check out: What size (amps)set is it. Single phase or three phase: All connections are tight: the Earth is in good condition: plates to be welded are clean: contact tip-rollers and liner is all the same sizes.Check on the front panel for a switch indicating Spot "......." or Stitch "--------" set these to off.

; Wire feed rollers turn when the trigger is pulled: The torch assembly is good condition. let's know how this goes

+1 a-tripod. That's the first thing that came to mind when I read it! Can't forget the ground clamp. Or, nod your hood down when it's layin' on the bench!

Why does the wire weld when I touch the metal?

BE CAREFUL. That sucker is hot and you have current going through it! If you get a voltmeter you will detect the juice.

Check to make sure the contact is not touching the nozzle of the mig welder. This would definitely short it out!

I have a Hobart handler 120/90amp wire feed welder. When i try to weld, all i get is a small spark.I turn it off, turn it on and it does it again. The wire feed works good,it just sparks, but will not keep...

I have welded countless hours with Linde & Lincoln & even a few Hobarts & the only time that I ever had the same problem was when the ground connection either to the object I was welding, or the welding cable ground wasn't good & clean & tight. Same on stick welders also. I did develop the habit of grinding not only where I was preparing to weld, but where I was placing my ground clamp & that always provided a better "frying bacon" sound as I went along the business of pushing a bead. In a welder, the only other thing than that is involved is the step-up transformer and your wire. Hope this helps.

Welder not welding

The contact tip is the main source of power, if the tip is bigger than the wire then you will not get a proper conection, the earth clamp is a essential part of the system make sure you have a good earth and all the conections are tight

Millermatic 200 will not weld

1 - Check the ground connection to the work, including the actual cable to clamp connection.

2 - Make sure that the wire feed rollers are nice and clean. The wire needs to be clean too.

3 - Check that the polarity changing wire connections are nice and tight, clean, etc.

4 - change and or service the contact tip at the end of the gun.

as always, gently clean out the loose junk inside the case. A clean welder is a happy welder. :-)
