How to solve simple tech 160GB EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVE

I was having a problem on Windows 7 with the SimpleTech 160GB drive not being recognized, went to the SimpleTech site and could not find any drivers - Went to MajorGeeks and found a driver update program - watch when you install it, do custom install so as not to get new homepage or toolbar. But it scanned and found where my drivers were deficient. Updated driver and drive is now recognized

My new monsoon vulkano pro initially recognized the external hard drive (500GB) that came with the unit, but now does not. any ideas? I've tried reinserting the eSata cables and rebooting unit without...

There are two possibilities, it is either the drive or the electronics/power supply. Take the drive out of the unit and either connect directly to your motherboard with a known working sata cable including a supply cable from the motherboard supply or buy a sata to usb converter with power supply and plug into the usb port of your pc. You need to know that you can still get the info off the drive. If You can recognise the drive by other means such as this then it is the electronics in the unit at fault or the power supply. Do you have a means of testing the supply such as a test meter to see if is working?

The drive will not power up even though the green light is lit on the power block. Is this an enclosure failure or the drive itself? EZQuest Monsoon 120GB external drive. Firewire 400 & USB2 capable.

Most of the time, this is an enclosure failure at the interface between the drive and outside panel. Usually this interface consists of a small circuit board with the SATA connections on the inside that converts the signal to USB and power p[lug on the outside. If you can get ahold of a SATA/EIDE to USB adapter kit, you can take the drive out of the enclosure and attach it to this adapter, then plug the usb port into your computer and if the drive is good, it will be read as another HDD. These can be bought at a computer store or on Ebay for around 20 bucks.

If your external HDD was used on a windows machine, it was probably formatted in the NTFS file format. Mac uses Fat32. The entire HDD has to be formatted to Fat32 for the Mac system to use.

Your Hitachi is a SATA hard drive, EZQuest manufactures both a SATA and an EIDE model. Is your model the SATA one, or does it have a large connector with about forty holes on two rows (EIDE)?

If both are SATA, you should be able to see a SATA slot on the hard drive, such as this

http://bixnet.net/images/HDD25SATA-Connector.jpg

and a largish black with two "L" slots in it (possibly, the connector is divided in two "L" connectors) such as this

Hope this helps, have a nice day

EZ Monsoon Hard Drive powers on but shuts off in 10 seconds

if it is external try putting it in a similar external case, this would mean that you would have to remove you drive from the casing and putting it in another and trying.

Don't remember how to use

I also have a Monsoon 320GB hard drive.  There is a power cord that attaches to the hard drive and the power source, make sure that the drive is turned off, plug the power cord in to the drive and the power source.  Mine came with two types of connectors to connect the hard drive to the computer.  Firewire to Firewire and a usb cord.  Use one of the cords to connect the hard drive to the computer.  Then turn your drive on.  If an icon doesn't show up on your desktop you can restart your computer, that usually works for me.  The drive functions just like your internal hard drive.  If you want to save files on the external drive just choose that option when saving a file.  Hope this helps.

Undelete/unformat a Mac formatted external hard drive.

The theory to unformat a Mac hard disk is, when you format a Mac HFS+/HFSX Volume or format a external hard disk, the data are not really wiped. Format process just marked your Mac hard disk as available to reuse, no matter it is quick format or complete format. So if you put if you fill in a mount of new data to your hard drive, then the formatted data are overwritten, your will permanently lose your formatted data.

Follow this guide to unformat your mac hard drive or formatted external hard drive on mac.

Formatted hard disk on pc now it won't run on mac

Try plugging your hard drive into your mac, open "Disk Utility" select your hard drive in the list on the side, Click RAID, change the Volume Format to MS-DOS (FAT), and it should work.
Hope this helps!
