Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Error 8001002B When a PS3 unit displays an error 8001002B, what does that mean? Happens whenever a bluray game disc is inserted into the stupid drive. At times it reads the game disc and during gameplay it freezes. You cannot complete 10 mnutes without the system freezing. Does this mean the drive is dying or the entire system is just pathetic. HD DVD should'v won the format war!!!

Thanks alot. The environment I live in is super dusty. Its in a remote village in Africa (Kenya). What can i use to clean the drive without causing much damage like scratching the lens? Can the can of air remove all the dust completely coz i was thinking the drive is inaccessible by that means unless you dismantle the unit?

Strange thing is that it reads DVD and CD data comfortably but not Blu-ray games... which are either loaded from the disc over a long period or error 8001002B pops up. Is that really a dirty blu-ray diode?

I dont want to take the Sony service route coz its long, tortuous and very expensive. Am better off buying a new console

That is the common "dirty disc" error. If it happens with every game, it more than likely means that your Blu-Ray diode is dirty. Do you have the PS3 in a dusty environment? Be sure to clean the vents on the side, above the USB ports and on the back of the PS3 on a daily basis. A quick swipe of a soft cloth will do.

You can try several solutions for your problem, the most common to buy a can of air and blow it inside the disc drive in hopes of cleaning the diode. You can also try a CD/DVD cleaning disc.

If it happens with every disc this could also mean a dreaded Blu-Ray drive failure, or in your case, one that is in the process of failing.

If cleaning it does not work, I highly recommend you give Sony support a ring.
