WE HAVE A SONY 42" TV THAT WE HAD FIXED 8 MONTHS AGO, AND THE WARRANTY RAN OUT OF COURSE. THIS MORNING OUT OF NO WHERE A BLACK LINE SHOWED UP OUT OF THE CLEAR BLUE SKY. CAN WE WATCH IT WITH A BLACK LINE ON IT? WILL IT DAMAGE IT FURTHER? ALSO WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT?
I hope you are handy with tools!!!!!!!
Just wanted to let everybody know that my plasma has the same problem but mine works fine for a minute and then it has the black line.. I took mine apart as suggested above. I took regular wrtting paper used as a shim to make the contact tighter, so far is working just fine.. I do not know if the paper is safe but I'm allways watching mine screen.

The line or dots on an LCD screen are because of dead pixels and tolerable upto a certain limit as per policy of the manufacturer. But line is not permissible and should be changed in the warranty support. The isssue you are reporting is the vertical line and the the film is to be changed. So if the set is not in warranty it might be a big expense as there is no way to fix it at home.
Yes, don't buy SHARP, problem solved! SHARP is the worst brand of LCD TV. I had to bring my brand new SHARP TV in for repair within 8 months of buying it brand new, and of course it was no longer under the 90 day labor warranty. Also, every person I know who has a SHARP TV has issues with volume and eventually end up with a black vertical line along the side of the screen within 1 to 2 years. I highly reccomend SONY, PANASONIC, even SAMSUNG, LG or VIZIO. Heck, I'd go with Toshiba or Phillips before I'd ever buy anything SHARP again I was so annoyed with their customer service.
I have same problem. Toshiba 42' hl196 purchased 4/07 line appeared 1 year and 9 months researched on Toshiba thread. Bad LCD screen. Repair cost more than tv-have to replace lcd screen. I didn't get the extended warranty. If still under warranty get hold of toshiba. Lot of people having same problem. Should get aclass action lawsuit started selling defective LCD screens. Had this same issue on right side of 52" about 1 inch from side but had 3 vertical lines that disappeared after 40 minutes. Have Samsung LNT5265FX/XXA and about 16 months old. LCD Panel itself had to be replaced to fix it, fortunately had extended service plan
Called ghost lines or banding. I researched on toshiba thread LCD screen bad. I have same problem purchased HL196 4/07 problem appeared 1 year and 9 months ago no extended warranty. If still under warranty call toshiba. LCD screen more expensive then orginal price of TV. Should file class action lawsuit for selling defective screens. Lot of people having same problem. goforth2953
You will definately want to call LG and have them refer you to an auth. service center for warranty repair. This is either a failed scan bd or mayber even a bad plasma panel and there is nothing simple for a problem as you describe.
The address module that is at the bottom of the PDP in that location is the suspect and the cheapest repair. There is usually 3 to 4 modules at the bottom of the PDP and each one addresses information vertically. If it were just one pixe wide then the PDP would be bad.
