Question about Water Heaters
Just had the service man out Friday but it's doing it again. Water heater goes out with one green vacation light on and the four right heat indicator lights on. Any clues?
Jan 2013. Intellivent gas control valve.
1) Copy following links for troubleshoot by type of gas control valve.
2) Are all 5 lights ON? Page 13 service manual.
The gas valve driver circuit is bad, or processor is bad.
Cycle power off for 10 seconds.
If problem is not fixed, then replace intellivent gas control.

Take the cover off and look for reset that has trip.If you can't find no reset turn the power off and wait for five minutes, turn on and turn water on also to see if you get hot water.

The instructions for installing the sensor will probably included with the new part. Also, when you receive the part and actually see it, you will probably know where it will go. Sometimes, things like this happen even with new units. I have had bad thermocouples on brand new units right from the factory. It happens and unfortunately it happens to us sometimes. Good luck and if you get the part and still have trouble, contact them again. If you would have bought a GE (Rheem) unit, they would have sent a tech out to your house at no cost. I'm not a fan of Whirlpool water heaters.

SOURCE: pilot light keeps going out
Change the thermo-couple.......$5-$10 at any home improvement store. It is a copper wire that is connected to the gas valve/control unit on the heater. Remove it by unscrewing it and bring it into the store with you to make picking it easier.

Most gas water heater problems today can be solved with yearly maintenance that includes cleaning burner parts, clean air intake, check venting, check electrical connections, bleed gas line, and check gas pressure.
Gas water heater manuals recommend yearly maintenance by service technician.
In past years, gas water heaters required less maintenance, but they were less energy efficient and more dangerous to operate.
Sounds like you have Intellivent gas control valve thermostat.
Open following link to identify gas valve and see error codes:
Error light on vacation + 2 other lights = 3 possible conditions:
1) Wiring error: check outlet with circuit analyzer:
2) Pressure switch tubing not connected, air intake obstructed (clean intake), or vent exhaust obstructed (check for proper venting).
3) System in lockout: Low gas pressure, hot surface igniter not positioned correctly.
You can do some of this yourself.
