how do I test the coils?

  • Anonymous Jan 21, 2013

Pull a coil pak and have someone try to start the engine as you lower the coil pak to the metal end of the plug to see if the pak arks a spark to the plug. CAUTION< DO THIS WITH GLOVES ON TO AVOID ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD!!

just asking, could the ecm have arcked and ruined the board?I don`t really understand where the spark generates from, there is no distributer,no rotor.

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2013

Sorry, I'm old and tend to use old technology in my answers. I believe you have low voltage going to each spark plug high voltage coil that boosts the voltage to each plug individually. The "distrivutor" and "rotor" are electronicly set up by the main computer system which senses the cam position to fire low voltage pulses to each high voltage pack.

I will see what I can find,do I need a new cam sensor? or replace the ecm?

  • Anonymous Jan 24, 2013

Before you spend any more money changing things out, try to get an OBD2 plug-in analizer from the auto parts store to find out what the codes say is wrong.

sir,my neighbor has a OBD2 analizer and I have no codes.First I did have codes,I went to replacing what the codes said and now I have no codes. It seems the computer canceled the codes.is this possible?

I contacted nissan about the ecm, they said they will only replace a relay,I can`t get my truck to them they are 35 miles away, the tow bill would kill me.the spark plugs are wet with fuel ,can I pull them out to dry up the excess, while I am figuring out what to do about the fire problem?

  • Anonymous Jan 24, 2013

I'm sorry for your plight. Yes, pulling the plugs eill help dry the cylinders, but still won't solve your problem. Also, it is possible for the system to clear the codes especially if the central computer is experiencing intermittent grounds.

how can I find a intermittent ground? does the fire come from the ecm?

How about the high voltage coil, the high voltage wires to the distributor cap, the cap itself and the rotor inside. Any one of these could be the problem.

SOURCE: throttle position sensor

HI
did your car have (ETS) electronic throttle control system
the TPSis a part of this system
but you can test it by using diagnoses scan tool to check the TPS value when press or depress the accelerator pad.
so you can tell us the NO. of DTC for example(P0122)

I had a coil pack that I just change less than seven days prior burn up then I change out but not it will crank but not start im stumped it is a Mitsubishi endeavor 2004 6cyl.

Hello,

Assuming your spark plug firing order is correct after the coil pack replacement and your plugs and plug wires are clean and connected properly--and you have gas in the vehicle--I am thinking Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).
To test the TPS you hold the throttle pedal to the floor and start the vehicle, if the vehicle starts you need to clean or replace the TPS.

If the vehicle will still not start and everything was replaced on the vehicle as the parts came off of the vehicle--and the vehicle ran before think:
Compression: Washed cylinders (pull plugs and squirt clean oil in spark plug holes (one-two squirts).
Fuel: pull hose after fuel filter and crank vehicle
Spark: Pull plug wire and arc with screw driver when cranking engine. New coil pack could be faulty.

You may need someone to crank the vehicle (mind your hands) while you test. You should be able to find videos for spark testing.

I hope this helps.

Where is the TPS sensor located,2004 Nissan Titan 5.6 v-8

The 2004 nissan titan is drive by wire, meaning there is no cable to control the gas pedal to throttle.
This system is computer controlled with a motor at throttle body and pedal sensors.

the TPS throttle position sensor is located inside the throttlebody . on most of these the complete throttle body must be replaced as there is no sperate tps sensor it is complete,
i would check and make sure this is the problem . GM started making TPS replacement sensors for there throttle bodies.

Stalling & Hesitate While Driving

Never attempt cleaning (spray cleaner) a MAF sensor or touch the element, It will damage the sensor. A dirty air filter will put the MAF sensor out of range. The only sensor subject to physical wear is the TPS (throttle position sensor) The low oil sensor will disable the ignition if more than a quart low. The crank sensor triggers the ignition and if not installed correctly will not pick up a signal(.018 air gap) Perform An OBDII scan of stored fault history before going any further to avoid buying more parts you don't need.

2006 Lincoln Navigator, goes for weeks with no problem then will gor for weeks with randomly not starting until the 2nd or third attempt . Car usually will crank but not turn over.

Turning over is cranking
You mean will not start !!

Given it is 5 years old

Change the Spark Plugs,if you haven't
Change both front O2 Sensors at 100,000 miles
Clean the MAF Sensor --CRC MAF Cleaner

Next -- TEST the TPS Sensor on throttle body
It is replacable. (2) T20 Torx screws and a hair
dryer to soften the thread locker
You may be loosing the throttle position on start up

Then check fuel pressure, at the fuel rail on engine,
also if your not going to work on it yourself, have the TPS
and Fuel Pump looked at with an Oscilloscope

The fuel pump may be going bad
