When i turn on my TV i get a large black box that covers much of the screen ,you can see a little of the tv around the edges and also hear the tv. My satelite company thinks it has something to do with closed caption , I don't know how to turn this feature on or off ,if this tv has such. This box usually comes on after a few minutes and somtimes i can get it to go away by turning the tv on and off, sometimes it will stay off for seconds of several minutes.A couple of weeks ago it would just start changing channels on its on and i couldn't get it to the channel i punched in, that hasn't happened for awhile. is my tv dying, can you help? Deb
Called a TV repair store, got info over the phone for no charge and the TV is now as good as new. You should tell folks about the charge straight up, I wouldn't mind paying for a service but think you should advise at the onset.

I have a similar problem using an older 20" flat screen standard definition TV. (not High Def). I can see a little of the picture but more than 2/3 is covered by the black. My model is LC-20SH7U.
I used sharpusa.com "contact us" section.
Hopefully I get some kind of reply to report what they say.
Note that the large black box goes away when pushing buttons on the tv (ex: the black box will disappear to show the volume setting when changing the volume on the tv but it will cover the picture and the menu display of the dtv box).
This is caused by the closed caption setting of the television set NOT the captioning of the converter box. To fix this you must open your television's menu, find the ccd/closed caption option, and turn it off. This is a frustrating problem as when most people are told to shut off the captioning they try to do so at the box.
Normal dtv box captioning will appear as a small text box at the bottom of the screen as you would expect - not as a giant black rectangle that covers most of the screen. If you do want to shut this off too you will find that you can't do it through the usual menu options (the menu will only allow changes to font, color etc.) - there should be a ccd button on the remote that when pushed will scroll through ccd-1, ccd-2,... off.
I have a Sharp Tv that had the same problem with a large brownish or black square right in the middle of the screen. It only left about an inch around the edges that you
could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.
If you mean that you get a black box, with a little of the picture visible around the edges, then your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. This puts a black box on the screen about 10 seconds after changing the channel. Go into the menu and turn off the closed captions and the picture will be back to normal.
