Run a wire from the + post of the starter battery and touch the other end to one of the contacts of one brush. Try to strik a arc. If no arc, touch wire to other brush lead. Hold this wire on brush lead for around 5 seconds. The brushes I'm referring to are/would be the smaller ones on the "exciter". The exciter lost it's magnetism. Now, there maybe a wire running from the alternator already in place. The brush would get its juice from the alternator. In tracing the wires from the alternator, it may go to a little square electrical device. This devise, about as square as a postage stamp, tricks the AC from the alternator into thinking it is DC. It is this little device that needs to be replaced. The welder will not operate untill there is "Excitement" from the exciter. Also there will not be any juice to your 110 electrical outlet..... I have a HOBART MEGA ARC 400 and need to replace that little device on mine. Everytime I use the machine I need to "excite" the exciter in the way I described.......Cowboy Bob
