Plug the adapter into the wall outlet or power strip. If using a power strip, make sure the strip is on. Most laptop power adapters have a small LED light; the light will illuminate when power is being transferred from the outlet to the adapter. If the light illuminates, chances are you have sufficient power to supply your laptop. Wiggle the power cord if the LED light did not initially illuminate. If the light turns on and off when you wiggle it, you might have a loose cord in the adapter, or the outlet could be faulty. Plug the adapter into another power outlet, preferably a different circuit in another room, if the LED light did not illuminate the first time. If it lights up from the second outlet, the first outlet either does not work or other devices were using too much power on the initial circuit. Connect the other end of the adapter to the laptop and turn the laptop on. When the computer starts up, you should see an indication of how the laptop is being powered in the lower right-hand corner. If you see a battery icon, then the laptop is being powered by the battery, not the adapter. Make sure both ends of the adapter are securely connected. If they are, and if the LED light on the adapter is lit, then you likely have a faulty wire that is not properly connecting to your computer. If you see a plug or adapter icon, then the laptop is successfully being powered by the adapter. If the LED light on the adapter is not lit, then the bulb is out, but the adapter is still working.

SOURCE: my laptop is overheating when plugged into mains.

Could be one of two things the adapter that you are using is not rated for your laptop or you have a loose power port .if you have a test meter set it for 20 volt dc touch the the silver outside contact with the black ground probe and the inside contact with the red positive probe the voltage should match what is labled on the adapter.if not you may have a faulty adapter .if the power port is loose you will have all kind of problem like starting and shuting down after 10 to 20 secounds or blue screen and serious error meassage and the board getting hot and failure .

Where does power cord plug in

If you are talking about a desktop / tower, you have a lead that goes from your wall socket outlet to the rear of the computer the end will be shaped like a kettle lead, in the trade we call them "kettle leads" Google image search and you will find it.
Now if you are talking about a laptop.
You have a lead that goes from your wall socket outlet to a mains charger and that's where the mains lead stops DO NOT try and plug that directly into the laptop.
Now with laptop mains leads you have three different types;
1) IEE
2) Cloverleaf ?? think of leaf with three petals
3) Figure of eight ??
If you Google image "computer mains leads"you will see the three different types including the IEE
To energise your laptop with or without a battery and after your mains lead you will need a "computer charger" or a "laptop charger"
On the underside of the laptop there will be a "rating label" telling you of the various voltages.
Or an easier way is to Google your laptop make & model
To get onto the internet you need either a Wi-Fi connection or a wired connection which is an RJ 45 plug Google the image RJ 45 and you will have your answer.
Good luck

How can you tell if your laptop battery is dead,or that your charger is bad?

Hi, if your mains plug has a fuse, I would check the fuse, if thats ok, put a multimeter on to the end of the of the charger lead and check for around 19v, it will say the exact voltage output on the sticker on your charger.

The green light malfunction indicates a issue with the charger not the battery.

Hope this helps

Best of luck

Hello my name is yogesh my leptop model is studio1555 and the problem is how to remove hdd password on my leptop because i set password but this password are not work and after 3 times you rong password...

you'll need to contact Dell support for this one. they will be able to help you request a password that you can use to reset/clear the hard drive password. After it is reset, you may then set a new hard drive password if preferred. Be sure that you have the ownership information of the system in order to get help from Dell about this issue.

My latitude d530 states its unable to recognise the a/c charger, now states pluged in but not charging

It is probably a problem with your DC charger port on your laptop. It is very common and it can start out one way and will get worse, there are many people who can fix it online or if under warranty call Dell!
DEFINITELY, check and make sure it is not the charger. Only way is to try another charger that you know is working. Because if it is the charger all along, the laptop is fine.
If you need it fixed, google this:
dell repair dc charging port
Or give me a call....

I bought a new dell charger and it's not being recognized. It's a PA-12 family charger and in the list is supposed to work with my 1501 Inspiron. Tried bios update.Microsoft ACPI is 6.0.6 already to.

Check in BIOS and see whether its recognised there..If its not, it could be the Motherboard which is the culprit here...if system is Out of Warranty, and its charging, then forget the recognising issue...other Contact Dell's Out Of warranty for repair options.Would suggest using Dell spares for the system than going with other 3rd party supported adaptors

The battery in my dell vostro 1500 wont charge and i have already tried a new battery twice. The laptop powers up with the AC adapter but when I check the power meter it says the battery is at 1% with an X...

Sounds like there is a disconnect between the power in and the battery, probably a broken solder joint or a fuse. Unless you are a tech, send it in for repair.
