Number keys on my mac laptop stopped working

This is my mother-in-law's computer. She uses it everyday, all day. All of a sudden, the number keys (1-9) just quit working. We have checked the mouse keys, but they are off. Not really sure where to look from here. Thanks for any advice you can give!

Two possibilities -
• go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse and if Mouse Keys is "on" turn it off.
• NumLock may have become enabled. To toggle that on/off, hold down Shift while pressing the "Clear" key, which is located immediately above the 7 key on the keypad part of the keyboard.

There is an electronic contact just under where you cleaned with damp qtip, so that may not have been very wise! There are screws on the back side of your laptop that do not remove but do loosen and release the keyboard. release the keyboard and gentely get keyboard to pop up and reseat connection. normally on laptops, keyboardsare able to lift where the f keys are and then slide in the direction of space bar to f keys

Check some basic things, like volume controls in Windows and on the laptop itself.

Do you have any other sound output jacks on the laptop? Do they work?

Sometimes the function keys on a laptop will allow you to turn features on or off, so check those. They are usually noted in blue printing on your keyboard. You press and hold the function key at the bottom of the keyboard, and then hit the key that controls sound, if you can find one.

Sometimes Windows updates cause drivers to stop working. Try reloading your sound card drivers.

You may want to download a new driver, or use a driver disc that came with your computer.

If you don't have a driver disc, and you have a Dell, you can use your service tag number (on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop) to find out exactly what drivers you need.

If you have another brand, you can probably look up the model number and find out easily.

If none of the above ideas work, it may be time to consider an actual hardware problem. It's actually easier to try to solve this through software or settings than to take the laptop apart and look for circult damage.

If your laptop is under warranty, call the manufacturer and send it back for repair. Opening the case will void the warranty.

I've just bought a new Acer Aspire 5742Z and the smart pad has suddenly stopped working. Any idea whether it's likely to be a hardware or software issue and how to fix it? I've tried...

Hi jennylewry...

To fix an unresponsive touchpad on your laptop, reactivate it by using the Function key on the keyboard and the Fn key.

This process is different for each computer manufacturer.
If unsure which Function key enables and disables the touchpad, try each one at a time and then
attempt to use the touchpad after each one.

A...Locate the "Fn" key of the laptop keyboard.
The "Fn" key has different colored text or the key is a different color.
B...Locate the function (F1 through F12) key at the top of the keyboard that disables or enables the touchpad on the laptop.
The key typically has an icon that resembles a touchpad with a finger touching it or a touchpad with a diagonal line through it.
C...Press both the "Fn" and touchpad Function key at the same time to reactive the touchpad on your laptop.
Move your finger along the touchpad to verify that it works. Press the combination at any time to disable the touchpad again.
Note: Mac computers use "F2" to enable and disable the touchpad.
D. Sony Vaio Users: Start>Settings>Control Panel>Double click the Mouse icon.
Look at the top left hand side of the page, at the top and make sure that the "Tapping" box is unchecked, if it is checked then, you will uncheck it.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up
