Ping is high at closest server. But low at servers much further
I've been having problems with my internet connection and xbox live.
I live just outside kansas city.
Dlink 4300 router
computer hooked up via wireless connection
Xbox 360 connected via LAN line to router.
I have a 7m download high speed cable internet through time warner cable. Experiencing lag in 90 percent of games I play in on XBox live. My brother who lives in Missouri runs a speedtest.net test and has slower upload and download speeds and never lags..however his Ping is around 35-50ms...
where mine measures 4500 download and 500 upload but my ping is at about 120-140ms ( i assume this must be the problem). For some reason I get a ping of around 50 when I choose a server on the map that is further away. Like springfield i measured nearly the same download/upload time but got a ping of 57ms.
What can I do to fix this problem...Can I change my router or xbox 360 setting to use one of those servers....maybe throughDNS settings. I don't know and I'm kind of at the end up my rope with the tech suupport at time warner...
Re: Ping is high at closest server. But low at servers...
Hello there i have built many wifi networks and install networks for server hosts. I would try setting your port forward to the correct port that xbox live runs on. also uncheck Qos (quality of service) this will throttle bandwidth, you want this off.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

find command screen on windows computer. XP it is under accessories. On windows 8 you have to use the search facility to find CMD.
On black command screen enter command
PING "server name" where "server name" is the server you want to find such as Microsoft.com.
Ain't it good that your ping is low? ;) In case you ment your ping is too high:•Try to close all the p2p programs like bittorrent etc. •Try some other server if you're facing this problem while gaming; the nearer, the better •go http://www.speedtest.net/ and post your results here
Hi loads of people are having the same problem, xbox live must be
having some downtime or server issues if you was the only one then it
could be your end but in the last hour their have been loads of posts
regarding this problem and all users are getting the same message.
try switching you xbox off and back on and if it still dont connect
then your going to have to wait i would try again in an hour or two,
usually down time for the servers is a couple of hours while xbox
install updates to xbox live, its not a problem your end so dont get
changing any settings, the problem is with xbox live so just bare with
them and it will sort itself out.
the last time this happened was about 6months ago and the downtime was
just over 4 hours, so bare with them for a bit and it will be sorted.
you could try logging into the xbox site on the net and not through
your xbox and check the xbox chat rooms and you will be able to find
out more their.
let me know if you need further assistance ok
plz rate this solution as i have a whole page on unrated posts, thanks
if u know the IP address of your router and ur servicve provider's server IP then ping it....
go to Start/Run
in the next window type this
ping 22.214.171.124 -t (the number is the IP address of ur router...replace the number written by me with ur router number)
ping 126.96.36.199 -t (the number here is the IP address of internet service provider server...replace the number written by me with one for your internet service provider server IP address)
the ping window will be a DOS window with responce from the respective server/router with milli seconds mentioned as responce time....if that comes then ur connection is ok
for further info check with ur internet provider
When choosing a server try to sort the list by ping rate and go with the lowest ping you can that is offering the map and amount of players you are looking for. If you frequently get disconnected or see connection_error on your screen while playing it could be a problem with your actual internet connection dropping packets. To test that you will need to ping a well known server like google or microsoft and see what ping times you get and if any packets are lost. This can by done by clicking start -> run and typing cmd then pressing ok. In the dos box that pops up type ping -n 20 www.google.com and press enter. Significant packet loss and high ping times could mean your connection is saturated from other downloads/uploads, there is some bad cabling or network hardware somewhere, or your ISP is having some problems. If you are connected to a router or other network equipment and assuming you have a high speed connection try connecting directly to the modem provided to you and see if that helps. If the problem continues you will need to contact your internet provider for additional troubleshooting.
This indercates that your computer is lagging somewhere between the modem and wow. you may want to reinstall world of warcraft and if your internet has a low data flow you may want to try testing your ping somewhere that there is very little people NOT like a major city
you may want to try diffrent servers
you may want to chek hat your background downloader is off by changing it on the launcher settings
try reseting your modem by turning it off for 15-30 secends
