There shouldn't be any need for a parallel-to-USB device, since your printer has both ports - and you could use ONE of the ports for printing. One, since two ports does NOT mean that the printer can serve two PCs simultaneously. On startup, it determines which port is active and "forgets" the other.
So I would have gone for either a parallel cable (IEEE 1284 standard, no longer than 10 feet) or a USB cable, running the cable directly from PC to printer.
If there's a need for several users to access this printer, I would either have shared it from my computer (where it's physically attached) to the other users in the network - or, purchased a jetDirect network card for the printer. With a JetDirect card the printer is accessible for all users over the network regardless of which computer is switched on.
Hope this clarifies and gives an answer to your question.

You need to change the port settings of your printer from the printer properties,
Go to printer >Right Click and select Properties Go to Ports> and select USB001 port
and select apply and then ok, now restart your printer and give the print command it should print now,

SOURCE: My Printer (HP LaserJet 1020)
I suppose that this is a mere software controversy. Try to do a system reset of the printer.
I mean, follow the steps.... First disconnect the printer, then uninstall all the printer's associated utilities from your laptop. Then install the latest driver for you HP Printer. You can find it on the HP's official website.
Then reconnect the printer and try printing. This will surely. Also check the if it is working on any other usb ports.

that is because ur head of ur printing cartridge is damaged.
remove ur cartridges black as well as color
n install only black cartridge n check d blinking of lights on ur printer if it doesn't blinks it's mean ur black cartridge is OK but ur blinking of light on ur printer is same it's mean ur head of black cartridge is damaged
after this process remove the black one cartridge and install the color one cartridge n check d blinking of lights on ur printer if it doesn't blinks it's mean ur color cartridge is OK but ur blinking of light on ur printer is same it's mean ur head of color cartridge is damaged
now take a dry cotton cloth n gently clean ur cartridges head install both cartridges on ur printer n check ur blinking light on ur printer that will work only if u r too lucky other wise u have to purchase a one cartridge.

try the following
1.power on your peinter
2.while press and hold the power button ,open and close the top cover times.
printer pick the paper and print the test page and alignment pattern for black and color.
if any of the black or color alignment pattern is not print ,then u have to change the cartridge accordingly.
