Unplug the laptop's power cord from the wall outlet and remove the internal battery pack. To remove the internal battery pack, simply locate the release button on the bottom of the laptop. This button needs to be held in while the battery pack is slid free from the computer. This button locks the battery in place, so if it is not held in the battery pack will not be able to be removed. Unscrew all of the screws from the bottom of the laptop. All laptops have different amounts of screws holding the external case together; however, there is usually one screw at each corner, and then one or two screws in the center of the laptop. Once all the screws are removed, slide the laptop's hard drive from the computer. The computer's hard drive will generally be located on the left or right side of the laptop; there will be a small symbol engraved into the laptop to denote its location. Remove the screen from the body of the laptop. To do this, remove the two screws from the back of the computer that hold the screen's hinges in place. Once the screws are removed, pull up gently on the screen until the two pegs that held the screen up have cleared the holes in the laptop's body from which they rested. There will be two wires that lead away from the laptop screen so make sure not to pull up so far that they become disconnected. Step 4 Separate the two plastic halves of the laptop's external case to expose the computer's internal components. Lift up on the keyboard pad and flip it on its face. You will notice a film-like strip that leads away from the keyboard and into the heart of the laptop. Before you can remove the keyboard, you must unscrew the metal piece that covers the computer's motherboard. This piece takes up the majority of the inside of the computer, so it will be very obvious to you when you are looking inside the laptop. Disconnect the keyboard connection after the metal covering from Step 4 has been removed. To remove the keyboard, follow the film-like strip back to where it connects to the computer's motherboard. The end of the connection will be held down by a small plastic tab. Pull up on this tab to release the keyboard connector and simply lift the old keyboard out of the laptop. Connect the new keyboard to the laptop. To do this, simply stick the end of the new keyboard's film-like connector inside the plastic tab that you released to remove the old keyboard. Push the tab back down so that it holds the end of the new keyboard's connector in place. Reassemble the computer by putting the components back in the exact spot you removed them from.

What you really need is the maintenance & service manual, but there doesn't seem to be one. You might try contacting Gateway support and asking.

To determine if you need to replace the keyboard, connect an USB keyboard to your laptop and if the USB keyboard functions properly then you need to replace the laptop keyboard.
If the USB keyboard malfunctions too then the motherboard is faulty.
It may not be cost effective to replace the motherboard.

Need to replace f key.

Hi friend, As you have mentioned that the "F" key form the keyboard is not working. So, I would firstly like to tell you to please try and connect any other USB keyboard to check if the "F" key is also not working from the other keyboard. If it does not work through the external keyboard, then you need to replace the motherboard and if it works with the external keyboard then you have to replace the keyboard of the system.

Replace keyboard on acer 8100 series laptop

Replace the inside of the keyboard with a new piece. One of the major problems with Dell keyboards is that the plastic pieces holding the keys in place become loose or broken. You can find a cheap keyboard from Papatek.com or an electronics store. Simply take apart the new keyboard, pull the keys off your keyboard, lay the plastic piece on top and replace your keys.

Need to replace keyboard

Hi,
I don't recommend to replace the laptop keyboard if you are not very familiar with hardware, though step by step instruction are available in net.
First check whether your laptop is still covered under warranty. If so, search the authorised service provider of your laptop model near to your place. And get the keyboard replaced by them. Sometimes you'll get it for free, if it is manufacturing defect.
Please come back and rate my solution if this turns to be helpful for you or also if you need more clarification. Thnx

Replacement keys are usually specific to your model laptop/keyboard. If you are missing some plactic hinge components an the rubber hat contact, then you need to replace the keyboard.
There are companies on the Internet that supply replacement keyboards, Google search for replacement keyboards for your model laptop.
