Try this.
When the mower is about to die, loosen the gas cap.
My mower gas cap vent holes plugged up and kept stalling the mower.
If it works, drill out the vent holes.

What is wrong with a Toro GTS5 that starts well but dies 5-10 seconds later. I have changed the spark plug, air filter and oil. New gas too. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I had a similar problem. I'll bet I took off the carb. 5 - 6 times and cleaned it with no success. Very fustrating! One time while checking the fuel level I accidently left off the gas cap, I started it and while running I put the gas cap back on and started to mow and about 10 seconds it died. I thought could'nt be! So I loosened the cap, restarted and it kept running. Any way the small vent hole was plugged. Thats my story!. Good luck.

Were the engine rpm's steady when it died? If it was hunting, the carb. probably needs cleaned.

The fuel filter can maintain an air bubble in it and still flow plenty of fuel. So does it restart after it dies? You can check the cap by running with the cap a little looser and see if it dies, I have not ever encountered a cap failure, but you could look to see if the vent hole in the cap is plugged.

If you had a crack in the fuel line or were sucking air in somewhere it probably would not run right from the outset.

Try removing the fuel cap for a moment, then try restart. If ok, check the fuel vent for plugging. Check the fuel filter for plugging. Inspect the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Check for spark when it stops--it may be the ignition module failing when hot. Check for sawdust and dirt plugging the ventilation system--blow it out with compressed air. Does the engine 4-stroke at speed when not cutting, but does 2-stroke when cutting? Make sure the chain is being oiled while running. Hope this helps!

Check the muffler for plugging. Does the primer bulb fill with fuel when pumped several times. If it takes a lot of pumps to pull fuel, replace the fuel filter or maybe the primer bulb if it appears to be hard or cracked. #4--reset fuel jet 1-1/2 turns? You say further on that the H and L jet needles have not been moved. These two jets are the only adjustable fuel control there is. Did you mean the idle speed screw? Did you get a snappy blue spark at the plug when you checked it? The caps on the two tanks are usually not directly vented--there are vents inserted into the tank casting. Try spraying some starting fluid into the plug hole, install the plug and pull through. If pops several times, concentrate on the fuel system. When cleaning the carburetor, you should remove the two jet needles to wash out those cavities. Spray carburetor cleaner is a better cleaning agent for carburetors than lacquer thinner. The lower chamber diaphragm directly controls fuel within the carburetor and it must be flexible and no holes! Go to: http:// for some good carburetor theory for 2-strokes. Hope some of this helps!

The plugged vent gets my vote. Loosen the fuel cap when it starts to starve.

Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor

This sounds too easy of a solution but I had a like ptroblem with my Craftsman. I loosed the gas cap a bit and the rough running and stalling stopped. he vent on the gas cap that contains a turn over interrupt valve was plugged causing the gas not to flow. I took the cap apart and cleaned out the vent hole though cleaning the holewith a paper clip would have worked as well. fixed my problem. I think my dirty hands of deris deposited the matera in the vent hole when filling with gas.

Try running it again and when it starts to die remove the gas cap and see if it starts to run better. It's possible that the gas tank isn't venting correctly. If that doesn't work post back and we'll try to come up with some other solutions.
