SOURCE: Replacing ink in the Canon BCI-3eBK Ink Cartridge
Hi Albert
Only do this if you are desperately keen to black ink all over your hands and desk.
I did it for a year, refilling all the cartridges. I never once managed to keep my hands clean. In the end my print-head died. It didn't like the black ink and I had to replace it. Now, despite the cost, I only use genuine canon cartridges.
If you are still keen, then you have to drill a hole in the top of the cartridge. Do it in the area where it says push. If you do it in the area above the sponge it will all go wrong afterwards. You must also block up the big hole in the bottom where the ink comes out (that's were you get all messy) and then use a syringe to squirt fresh ink in through the hole you have drilled. You can also get messy here as you sometimes get bubbles blowing back and bursting, putting a nice layer of ink speckles on whatever is nearby - often your spectacles!
When you have got enough ink into the reservoir, you have to block up the hole you drilled. Some ink kits come with rubber bungs to put in the hole - but beware - they rarely fit properly and they let air into the chamber.
This has the unfortunate side effect of letting all your fresh ink run out of the bottom of the cartridge and all over the inside of your printer. After several instances like that I threw the bungs away and used a blob of blu-tac which I double sealed in place with tape.
The next trick is to remove whatever you used to block up the big hole on the bottom and try and get the cartridge back into the printer without making a mess. If you succeed you will have saved a couple of pounds or so.
Unfortunately, as I found, the saving is short lived as the hassle is too great.
Anyway (if I'e not put you off) good luck
SOURCE: HI I HAVE A CANON MX 320 MULTIFUCTION MACHINE, THE
5100 error means a Carriage Home Position Error.
Just make sure you remove the plastic strip covering the print head and
the contact copper of the ink cartridge before you insert it to the
cartridge holder.
Other possible solutions is that the cartridge is not properly seated
on the carriage or cartridge holder. Once it is not properly seated the
cover of the cartridge holder usually hit when it moves.
You may also clean the contact copper of the ink cartridge using an
soft cloth or cotton moistened with alcohol to clean the surface.
Please avoid touching the surface by your fingers.
In most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer ONLY WHEN PROMPTED, to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken. Sometimes it is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the PC command or can be an issue with ink drying or poor ink cartridge contacts. Also check the mechanical settings of the ink cartridge , if jammed or tight remove motor and manually free the drive before it is set back.
