Try putting the remote in 'safe mode' before doing the firmware update. I can't think of anything else you can try, but 'safe mode' --> Firmware update often does the trick. Here's how:

Launch the Logitech Remote software on your computer and click on "Downloads" (on the top menu bar). Then, take the battery out of your remote and at the same time you connect the USB cable to your remote (it should be already connected on the computer end) press and hold down the Off button at the top of the remote. This will put the remote in "safe mode". Continue to hold down the Off button until you see the message "safe mode requested" on the remote's screen and the screen starts blinking. Now, since your screen is not behaving properly, you may or may not see this message, but after about 5 seconds you can release the Off button. Now, go back to your computer and click on "Firmware". If the software is able to communicate with the remote, an update to the remote's firmware should be executed. This has solved many a 'blue screen of death' problem. Good luck!

SOURCE: 520 remote is locked in safe mode...tried

Hi There,

One solution I have found online for getting the 520 out of safe mode is to follow these steps:

1. Remove the batteries.
2. Hold the '2' button down on the remote.
3. Whilst still holding the '2' button down, replace the batteries.
4. The remote should now boot in normal mode.

Please note, If the 'off' button is held down whilst inserting the batteries the remote starts up into safe mode.

Hope this helps,

James

My remote won't work

Many remote controls freeze up and appear "Dead", but some can be instantly brought back to normal operation by following 4 simple steps.

Use these steps on OEM (original equipment) remote controls for TVs, DVDs, Audio Systems, Satellite and Home Theaters.
Note: If you follow these steps on a universal remote control, you will need your universal's owner's manual to reprogram it.

1) Remove all batteries from the remote
2) While the batteries are out of the remote, push and release every button on the remote control one at a time, until all buttons have been pressed and released at least once. This action drains the capacitors in the remote's circuits and causes the remote's brain to go back to factory defaults.
3) Re-install the batteries, taking care to insure each battery is installed correctly. Use new batteries if you are unsure about the batteries you removed.
4) If this Remote Re-Start procedure is going to work, your remote should now be back to normal. Try it.

My toshiba flatscreen says retail unlock on it an it wont do nothyn.. how i fix it without original remote

You can reset and eliminate the lock on some televisions without the remote.. Hold the power button for five seconds. The television will automatically restart. If the lock is still on, unplug the television and remove the battery from the back panel of the television. Wait several hours before reconnecting the plug and reattaching the battery.

You say you have a Universal remote. If you have not done so yet use the procedures that came with your remote to install it on your Toshiba. After using the install procedures you should at least be able to power on and off the TV.

power the TV on and then do the following:

TOSHIBA specific advertisements or "Retail Lock" at anytime when operating, perform the following procedure:
  1. Using the remote control, press 1, 2, 3, 4 in this order. This will release the "Retail Lock" mode.
  2. Perform a factory reset of the TV
  3. Resetting Factory Defaults:
To reset all settings and channels to their factory default values:
1 Press the MENU button and open the Installation menu.
2 Highlight Reset TV, and then press the ENTER button.
3 Enter your PIN code (If a PIN code has been set).
4 A con?rmation screen appears. Select Yes, and press the ENTER button. The TV will turn off automatically.
Then do the following:
  1. Power on the TV. You will be prompted to perform the first time setup.
  2. Be sure to set the Location option to Home.
  3. Continue with the first time setup.
The "Retail Lock" should be disabled and you can now use all the functions of the TV.

hope that helps

How to reset harmony 650 for 'system error!' ?

If your remote is not behaving properly, you can reset it. To do so, remove one of the batteries, hold down the All Off button, and reinsert the battery. A message will appear on the remote screen indicating that the remote has entered safe mode. Next, connect the remote to your computer and sync it. The remote should now be updated and functioning properly.

Possible this is poor contact by the button battery with the contacts.I am also having a similar problem, but if I squeeze the remote case just above the set of alarm buttons (this is over the battery) my on/off button tends to work as well as other buttons near the top of the remote. (Certainly is annoying that the radio is completely useless without the remote.)

Can't get the docking station to charge the remote battery. blue light. Not sure if I am getting good contact. Have used contract cleaning solution with not success. Appears that I do have poewer coming to...

Generally there are three possibilities (apart from the battery going bad) that can cause your battery not to charge:

1) Some folks have reported that the battery is not sitting tightly enough in the battery compartment. You can try folding a small piece of thin cardboard and place it between the battery and the back of the compartment. This will push the battery towards the front of the compartment and create a tighter connection against the contacts.

2) There have been reports of problems with some of the charging cradles in which the remote does not make sufficient contact with the contacts in the cradle. This sounds like it could be your problem. To ensure that the remote begins to charge, place it in the cradle and listen for a single beep. The slide show should start and then, after a few moments the screen should darken. If you hear two beeps at any time, it means that the remote has lost contact with the charging cradle and has 'woken' and is no longer in charging mode. Wiggle the remote to ensure that it is sitting in the cradle and making contact. There are also some fixes that can be done of the cradle itself, including opening it up and adjusting the height of the contacts. Others have had luck cleaning the contacts on the remote and the cradle with alcohol or a contact cleaner like DeoxIT (sounds like you tried this). Still others have actually sanded down the plastic surrounding the contacts on the outside of the remote in order to bring them closer to the cradle contacts.

3) If you still have trouble after you have tried everything above, there may be a loose connection inside the remote itself. There is a very small plug that connects the charging terminals on the remote to the battery compartment. In some cases, this plug can become loose (especially if the remote has been dropped). If all else fails, you can open the remote and check to make sure that the plug is completely seated or attempt to push the terminal contacts slightly farther out. However, most people have found that altering the height of the contacts on the charging cradle is a better way to go. If you decide to open the remote, do the following: remove the two screws - one in the battery compartment and one at the top of the remote. Then, using your thumbnail (this is really the best, unless you have a thin, rigid piece of plastic. A part of a credit-card may work), force your nail between the two halves of the clamshell casing near the bottom of the remote on the left or right side. Once you get your nail (or plastic) into the remote, angle it down at about 45 degrees and simply slide your hand up one side. This will release all the locking tabs very nicely without marring the surface of the remote. Then do the same on the other side. Once you are done exploring, simply realign the two halves and snap them back together.

Harmony 550 is locked on safe mode

Try this:

  1. Remove the batteries from your remote
  2. Press and hold down the 2 button while connecting the remote to your computer
  3. The Harmony Remote LCD screen should display Upgrade Success
That should do it. If it doesn't work try pressing all the keys and make sure none are stuck in the down position and then retry the above steps.
