Whenever storing the generator for any length of time after use, it should be allowed to run out the gas from the carburetor by first shuttinig off the fuel petcock, to avoid the gas in the float bowl from deteriorating and gumming up the small idle passages. With the mandated ethanol additives that are used, the gas breaks down much faster than pure gasoline, so it's more crucial to do this prestorage maintenance.
Luckily the Yamaha incorporates a fuel petcock to make this simple to do, unlike other generators that don't enable the fuel to be turned off independently of the engine.
