Question about Kitchen Appliances - Others
There is a catch on the lever that is loose or broken. You may have to dissemble it to find out. If broken, just order the part. It is pretty easy to put on.

why do you think cancel button is broken , is it stuck ? if not you gave a bad control board . so recheck the button , and pick at it to pop back to normal . if you need a board your out of luck , no parts are made for toasters anymore . its a toss it and get a new one world . if you get 4 years out of todays toasters your doing good Please if this answer helped , please rate this 3 or 4 stars . and keep me in the paid answer department . A 1 or 2 may knock me down into the unpaid ranks. Thanks Cactus Bob .

The contacts on my magnetic lock (lever) had some crumbs and build up on it. I had to take it apart but just cleaning it made mine work fine again.

SOURCE: toaster will not switch on.
Two possibilities that the switch down is defective or the latch down is not working.
So this can be probed if you can remove the plug and check for bits of dirt from crumps that have got entangled and burned into the switch or the latch.
if you can open the toaster remove and see if there is dirt that has clogged into this section. If you have a multimeter check the continuity of the toaster coil and the bi-metal switch which has to latch off when the set temperature is reached. If the coil is open , it will be better to do away with this than to repair by connecting the open wires which might last for some more time.
If the switch contacts are faulty clean and use a anti-grease spray( WD40) to clean up.
reset and connect making sure that the leads are not shorted to the body .
