Here is a link to John Deere website for this model, it states that it has a 16 amp charging system. It also has the phone numbers listed for contact, and requesting the manuals for this mower.

The first thing to check on this machine is your voltage regulator try bypassing the voltage regulator to see if the alternator starts charging, it would be better to check your charging system with a voltmeter so that you know what the exact input and output in the electrical system.

It should have continuity. This provides main power to coil and spark. This will also in return lead to your cdi and charge your system as well.
