Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I was trying to save a file from laptop to my USB external HD, Due to big files it went to a delay write failure, my external HD suddenly stopped working. Whenever I plug in to any computer it just detect for awhile then it would seize the detection process. During the short period of detection sometimes the autoplay from WIN XP would show up some file indexing then its back to nothing. My external HD is a 80GB seagate, Im running WIN XP SP2.

    Thanks for the quick response,

I tried to connect the device to Window Vista, and it works quite well.. Although I couldnt do CHKDSK or even create a folder. I was able to copy most of my data. I will try to format it and bring it back to XP to see if it works or not. I was wondering if there is a way to save portable hard disk from crashing. Thanks

Hello. It sounds like your external hard drive has crashed, or is getting ready to crash. If you can back up your data, you should do it now. If not, you should get your drive to a professional as soon as possible.

I'll monitor this thread. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Chkdsk flags bad sectors on the disk, but unfortunately nothing will reverse the crashing process. You should replace the drive.

    Good luck!

How to download my file from my old computer

The simplest way to transfer files from your old to your new computer is by using USB flash drives. Just save your files from the old computer onto the flash drive then plug this USB drive in to the new computer and save the files there. If you have large files, you can also use an external hard drive to copy and transfer files.

ACER Aspire L100 Desktop is dead?

If the hard drive is OK then you can remove the hard drive from the desktop case, and insert the hard drive into a USB 3 1/2" hard drive adapter case, this should come with a power adapter. These are available at your friendly computer shop.
Boot up the laptop then plug this USB hard drive adapter into the laptop's USB port. The laptop will see this as an external USB hard drive. You can open the various folders and files on this external drive and copy the folders and files to the laptop.
You can delete the Windows folder and Program Folders on this external drive to free up disk space and use this as a back up drive etc.
If you are not sure how to remove the hard drive and install it into an USB hard disk case, then I suggest you get a computer savy friend to help you.

might be split up into partitions, see how big your bios says it is, if you're using RAID0 that could be the problem.

My maxtor external hard drive has done a scheguled Plan b backup but files that I removed from my master hard drive to free up space because I had them saved on my external hard drive are now missing from...

When a file is delete, it's still there on the drive, just as before; all that happens is that the file table marks it as free space and changes its name so it's no longer visible. There are a number of "undelete" utilities available, including several good ones, like asoftech data recovery that helped me before:

Hi kennithtang,

Lets troubleshoot this together. First, lets check and make sure the power cord is plug into the wall and to the external HD, second, make sure the communications cable (most likely a USB cable) is plug into a USB port as well. If this does not work, try plugging the USB cable into another USB port on the computer or monitor. Hope this resolves the issue. If not, then hopefully, the hard drive from the external HD is extrackable. Then may need to purchase an enclosure that in compatible to a 500GB hard drive.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I WANT TO FIND AWAY TO REBOOT MY PC WITHOUT LOSING MY FILES AND MY PICTURES

I am assuming you want to re install or upgrade your operating system without losing your files. If this is the case the solution is simple. Purchase an external USB Harddrive Large enough to hold all your files. Plug it in and save all your files to it. After you re-install or upgrade your operating system simply copy your files back. You can purchase 500GigaByte external harddrives for under a hundred dollars these days at best buy or circuit city and even cheaper online. As an added bonus you will have a full back up of all your files in case of future catastrophic harddrive failure.

I hope you found this useful. If you did please don't forget to rate me FixYa.

Thank You,
George
