Question about Audio Players & Recorders

The cassette deck in my '95 BMW 325i now just flips from side 1 to side 2, without actually playing. Everything else with the stereo still works fine. Might this be a problem that a non-profession

Before this last week, the cassette player worked fine, but every once in a while, if I tried to rewind or forward an older tape, it would switch to side 2 and play. Now it doesn't even play, but just keeps switching sides, on any tape. I don't need it to play both sides, so if I could simply disable that function in order to get it to play again, that would be okay, too.

The unit has to come out of the car and taken to a auto Stereo repair shop. I would guess without seeing it that there is a loose belt that is causing a detection of the deck not turning the reel the detector is on and that tells the electronics the tape has stopped and if there is no drive in the other direction it does the same thing. If a capstan belt breaks there is no drive in either direction. The belt may not be hard to replace but you need to know the routing and the size then just order from MAT Electronics or MCM Electronics and put it in. I also think the Head and Pinch Rollers are going to need a real good cleaning. Use Naphtha for that. I serviced car stereos back in the 80 and 90 not so much anymore. If you can do it depends on your technical ability.

Stereo cassette keeps flipping sides

Could be the main belt is broken ( or slipping badly ) and when the deck detects that the tape isnt moving, it flips sides. Check the main belt.

I can't find the manual to my Technics RS-TR272 Stereo Cassette Deck. How do you tape something on one cassette to another?

Place the tape you want to record into the left deck, Then the blank tape into the right deck. Press play on the left deck and record on the right deck.

It may be opposite depending on which side your recording deck is on.

Which ever deck has record, place blank cassette into that one and the cassette you want to copy into the other deck.

Hope this helps and please rate thanks

I have a TEAC W-450R Stereo Double Reverse Cassette Deck. For some reason, the REC/PLAY II side will not operate. It has not for some time. In fact, that is why I believe I mothballed it some years ago....

I have not seen those to a large extent due to their value not being worth a repair. I did work on them at Teac though. The capstan motor of the right side deck sound like it is burned out. I have some motors here so it is just a matter of if you want me to work on it or not. I get a lot of units in all the time- I am Skywave Tape Deck Repair in Chicago area.

Try rebending the plate back and restoring everything to proper condition/orientation and see what happens. Worth a shot.

Tape will not turn

The more detailed the description of the problem, the better for diagnosing the root cause. Thanks.

It sounds like you have a couple of problems. I'll address them as you have them numbered above.

1. Decks typically have belts to drive the various 'reel' mechanisms. Therefore, they can slip without breaking anything inside the machine or the tape. Your first symptom leads me in that direction.

2. That it migrated is mysterious, unless Sony is using a common motor to handle both decks' reel duties.

3. This symptom may have something to do with the root cause of both sides jamming...

Do the cassette well doors come off, say, for cleaning? Could they be dislodge? If so, they may have something to do with the jamming problems in # 1 and #2 as the doors play a part in positioning the cassette and holding it in place against the reel motor cogs. How do the doors operate with NO tape inserted?

Does it take excessive force to close the door only WITH a tape? make sure the tape is fully seated before closing the door. The capstans (directly below each reel cog) have to engage through the small holes at the lower edge of the cassette. They should be straight and clean. Any dirt or oxide on them will cause problems as these are what move the tape at the precise speed necessary for good playback or recording.
---

My hipshot recommendation, otherwise, is to look around inside the cassette wells very carefully for any foreign matter, debris, dust bunnies.

Do you maintain the deck as recommended?

If it is a stock radio then it may be from a different car. You will need to take the radio out or take the car to the dealer to get the code. I would just go and buy a new one and upgrade to a CD with MP3 capabilities. BMW troubleshooting fees are generally $60. Buy a new one.
