Unplug dryer , remove back panel and you will see a thermo link in about the middle of the back of dryer with a vom test continuity of the link this is a very common problem . if no continuity replace thermo kink . if it tests good remove access pane in front of dryer and turn the dryer on to a heat cycle, see if the ignitor coil gets red hot. if it doesn't then the ceramic coil is bad. these are the 2 most common problems with gas dryers. if still no good write back

I smell gas when my gas dryer is not on and the pilot light is not lit prior to turning on; it is a 1997 series 70 kennmore

There is a leak in the gas line supplying the dryer. This is DANGEROUS and should be repaired.

S for the pilot light, is it continuously on or is there an igniter that only heats up when you start a dryer cycle?

Kennmore Elite HE4 no heat on low or extra-low setting

Assuming this is a gas dryer, it is likely the igniter has failed. The igniter plate has to heat up to glowing in order to heat up the thermocouple that turns on the gas valve.

Dryer wont heat up just spins keeps spinning with timer set. replaced heat element and still wont dry

Hi,

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

check out this electric no heat tip...

Tumbler spins, heat won't go on, timer won't work

It is your operating thermostat. It controls the heat and runs the timer down.

Dryer will spin but won't heat up

Hi

Things that could stop a electric dryer from heating:
  • house fuse or breaker ( needs two of them )
  • heating element, burnt wire
  • thermostat(s), thermal fuse ( not all models ),
  • motor heat switch, timer, selector switch,
  • burnt power cord/plug.
You can check these things using an ohmmeter/multimeter from here.

Things that could stop a gas dryer from heating:

  • glow bar igniter,
  • thermal fuse ( not all models ),
  • coils on the gas valve, gas valve, thermostats,
  • motor heat switch, timer, selector switch, sensor.

A page for checking gas dryers is here.

Dryer spins but does not get hot

The problem could be a faulty component such as the timer, heating glow bar, gas coils, safety or operating thermostats. First thing to do is to check the venting to make sure it is not plugged. I cover that more in detail if you wanna check it out.
