Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE Spacemaker JVM1533WD turntable sometimes works, mostly doesn't

I have the above microwave, and most of the time the turntable doesn't turn. In contrast to the other people on FixYa with this microwave, however, the microwave does heat even when the turntable isn't turning. Usually, after the microwave has not been used for quite a while (overnight, for example), the turntable will work perfectly. But trying to use it a second time invariably results in the turntable remaining perfectly still. I'd love to be able to fix this myself if possible. What might be wrong, or what troubleshooting steps can I take, and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks,

dan

Thanks for the idea; unfortunately that's not it. I should have mentioned, but I have tried without the turntable in the microwave at all, and the piece coming out of the floor of the microwave that causes the table to turn doesn't even move most of the time.

The part with the three rollers that holds your turntable needs to be replaced if you want it to turn. That plastic and those rollers get cooked over time like everything else. The microwave is designed to basically cook with the moisture in anything placed inside the microwave. Those rollers have probably become warped enough so they don't roll properly when heated and that is why they do work somewhat after a night of nonuse. You may be able to find one at a local repair shop for almost nothing. Those parts are pretty generic. Even at a garage sale or flea market. Other than buying from a local dealer you can go on the internet at www.mwoparts.com and get any part for the microwave. Good luck and God bless you.

Microwave turns on but no heat and turntable doesn't turn

It is one of two things, a defective door switch, "most likely" or the keypad control board is faulty.

Turntable in GE Spacemaker does not work most times. If rotate manually, may work for a moment -- but won't stay on.

I think you have the worm gear worn. Even the motter is okay. It comes with all things together, so just replace the moter .

GE JVM1860CD001 turntable does not turn. Buzzing sound. Sometimes sensor error, close door. Heats and seems to work most times.

If this is an old unit. Unplug it. Take all of the outer screws off and remove the metal cage. Turn on side and look on the bottom at the rubber band drive. It might be wore out of stuck. Try to turn it manually.

Turntable stopped working

Most of these are belt driven. You need to uncase the unit and check the belt.

Like anything with high voltage, use good safety practices.

It sounds like you have a jamming turntable motor.

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!
