Re: sony hifi wont play cd's
Optical lens requires cleaning. Please put cd cleaner in tray and check if it cleans dirt on lens. Still same problem, then unplug unit from AC outlet, take off top cover of hifi system and clean lens with good quality cotton bud. hope this will resolve problem.

Dirt or dust can get on the lens anytime. It could be brand new and a spec of dust get on and cause it to stop reading discs. You don't have to keep cleaning it unless it lives in a dusty room, or where someone is a heavy smoker. It's a good idea to make certain any discs you put in have a wipe over first. But you will have to clean it now.
Hello If it does not play the cleaner disc, just inspect whether the disc inserted in spins inside it. You can check this by open the upper cover of the player, and inserting a disc into it. If inserted disc spins inside, and the player won't read it, the fault is with its laser pickup unit, and it should be replaced with same type and number. If the disc dos not spins, the fault is with the sled motor [the motor that spins the inserted disc], has damaged, and should be replaced. OK.
It could be 3 things. 1. the Laser carrier may be stuck and may need to be gently pried from centre to outskirt and back. 2. your cd spinning motor has gone and needs to be replaced, 3. your laser carrier motor has gone and needs to be replaced, hope it helps.
Failure of this laser is quite common giving a no disc message in the HiFi's display. A defective laser can also be responsible for an intermittent no disc message and general playability problems with CD discs. Part number Optima 7 / 7B Laser Assembly

I know that Panasonic provides chips, optics (laser),etc. to Emerson. I am familiar with the problem you've experienced because I've had a Panasonic CD Player. If the disc doesn't spin (as you said), the problem must be that your shelf system probably has an optical problem (laser problem/pickup problem) and will need to be serviced.
