The breaker button keeps popping on my heater. 14yrs old. stored indoors. was in use for 1/2 hr then sat for an hour. went to start no fire just noise then pop and smoke. took off top cover got sloppy...

There is a good possibility that the motor is not running at full speed. You should attempt to turn the fan and check for stiffness in rotation. The breaker is sensing a high current draw and is perfroming normally. If you find the motor is stiff use a parifin based lubricant. The "Zoom-Spout" Oiler is the most common oil that we use and can be purchased for around $3.00. There is an internal tube inside the oiler you can pull out / extend that is great for reaching into tight places. Make sure to lubrcate both ends of the motor.

The other thing to check is to see if the ignitor is shorted. Read resistance from the wire to the probe surface. If you read resistance the ignitor is internally shorted.

The owners manual is here:
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/media/i3d/01/A/man-migrate/MANUAL000007880.pdf

Parts can be found here: (ignitor on this page)
http://www.reddyparts.com

I doubt that the fuel filter is causing your symptom but... if the ignitor remains on due to a lack of fuel flow it may be tripping the breaker. The ignitor should be on for less than 10 seconds.
Fuel and Air Filters are here:
http://www.reddyparts.com/filter_kits.htm

Lstly the ignitor transformer may have shorted since you said the unit is 14 years old it probably has this transformer installed:

This transformer is no longer available and has been replaced by this rather pricey kit:
http://www.cart32hosting.com/cgi-bin/cart32.exe/REDDYPARTS-store?catid=14&prodid=24&Theme=Demo NOTE They recommend Photocell replacement should you have to change this transformer.

Service Manual can be found here:
http://www.bealsmotor.com/Desa%20Hot%20Surface%20Manual.pdf

That should just about cover it. If you need more assistance just repsond here and I will help you.

Heater comes on fine runs 5 to 10 minutes and quits. sometimes it doesn't run that long

Are you using old fuel from last year? If so, drain/clean tank. Check/replace fuel filter. Refuel with fresh fuel & test again.

Only large flame comes out and fan does not start

Since this is a propane unit, do not turn it back on again without the fan working. First check to see if the unit has a pop out style breaker, reset it if popped. Check to see if you did not trip a breaker at the breaker box.

Starts to run. Then pops CB in about 2 seconds. Ignition is OK. I think it momentarily lights off. REDDY HEATER made by DESA of Bowling Green, KY

Hi, when a circuit trips that quik, it indicates a dead short somewhere or even a motor drawing way to much amps for the breaker to handle. If this heater is a forced air type, try and find the wiring that controls the blower motor and disconnect it for just a few minutes to test it. You may want to do this with other control componants one at a time, just by- pass each one by unplugging or disconnecting each one and start it. If the breaker holds when you do this, you will then know which part is causing the breaker to trip. Keep me posted on your progress.

Heater runs hot for a few minutes then stops heating

I would say from what you have described your problem is a bad thermostat heat sensor (you may have to replace the whole thermostat on this model!) This is a very common problem for this unit!
