2 and 3 are the British standard connections. On the wires side you shoud have a pair, which means one of the 3 wires will be spare. Give it a try. If you have connection on the wire, you should be ready to rock.

Telephone jack wiring

Most cheap jacks have 4 wires, red, green, yellow & black. Most modern houses have wires paired up (twisted pair) like blue & white with blue line or stripe. Line 1 is red/green or blue/white. Line 2 is yellow/black or orange/white(with orange line/stripe).

Secondary telephone socket has 4 wires: Green, Red, Blue and White. Not sure in which of the 1 to 6 numbered terminals these wires are fed into? Please help!

If your hooking up the telephone jack for one line you would connect your line to the red/ green pair (3 and 4). If your hooking up 2 lines your second line would go on the yellow/ black pair (2 and 5). If you were hooking up a third line to the jack it would go on the white/ blue pair (1 and 6).

Our Phone wiring is underground and the connector box on the outside of mthe house was done in1978. My problem is that I hit the wires and some of them were knocked loose from the terminal and now I don't...

green wires and red wires.......... that is line one. also solid blue and blue with a white stripe is also line one..... so tie the greens and blue w/white stripes together and tape off (if not screwed down to block), and do the same with the red wires tied together with the solid blues.

yellow and black is line two.....and so is solid orange and orange w/white stripe. then just fill in the blanks as stated above.
its simple, think of the wires as speaker wire in a way to simplify what you are looking at. multiple Pairs (+/-) wires color coded. if the wires came off of the screw down posts, just match up the colors like stated above on the posts and screw them back down.

I have a cable with 6 wires but my wall phone jack only has connectors for 4 wires; none for the blue and white wires. what to do?

Most phones use ONLY two wires. Check which pair of the 3 pairs you have has about 50 volts on it.

Connect those to the center two contacts of your jack which MIGHT be labeled red and green or ring and tip respectively.

If your phones require other connections, they may be incompatible with the system there.

How do i connect a telephone wire to an rj11 plug. What is the order of the wires for us telephones.

dialtone should go on the green and red wires of the jack for 1 line service, yellow and black for a second line.
Depending on the type of wiring that your dealing with the color code can change. if your wiring has white wires with little dashes of color on them then the code is:
green = white/blue (mostly white with blue dashes)
red = blue/white (mostly blue with white dashes)
black= white/orange (mostly white with orange dashes)
yellow= orange/white (mostly orange with white dashes)

Replaceing phone wall plate

Hi Leanne!

Normally the conductors in phone cable are colored green, red, black and yellow in older style wiring. Green and red are used for a single line, and black and yellow are for a second line. Newer systems use wires that have conductors twisted together in pairs. White with a blue stripe paired with solid blue or blue with a white stripe is line 1. White with an orange stripe paired with solid orange or orange with a white stripe is line 2. (At least this is true in the US. You said "cheers" so maybe you're not in the US and the color coding's different.)

Chances are your line is using the blue and white wires.Residential telephone equipment isn't polarity sensitive so it really doesn't matter which wire you hook to L+ and L-. Try the white/blue combination first. If you don't get dialtone then try red/black. If still no luck you only have two more combinations to try.

Before you start with the wiring, take another phone on the line off the hook (if you have another one). This will prevent an incoming call from ringing the line, which can give a shock if you happen to be touching a bare end. The ringing voltage is much higher than the normal phone line voltage which won't bother you.

The blue and blue/white attach to the red and green wires behind the jack assembly. The other colors are only used for a 2nd and 3rd line number. Thank You Jerry

Inside phone wiring

Red and green (2-wires) are all that is typically needed. This does depend on if the other end of the wire is properly hooked up!
