Make sure to plug the telephone fax line from the phone jack in the wall to the Line port on the back of your printer. For more info, please refer to the Lexmark X125 User's Guide.
If you have an answering machine connected to the same fax line, be sure to configure it so that it answers first before the fax machine (e.g. if your answering machine picks up on the 3rd ring, set your fax to pick up on the 6th ring or more)
If the line has a voicemail feature, disable it or request for a distinctive ring from your phone company.
Yes the low ink has no bearing on why you cannot fax. First check that you have the telephone lead plugged into the "Line" socket and not the "Tel" socket. Place your doc on the feeder and select Fax. now dial the number and press black start. All should be well and it should go.
I am attaching a copy of the manual that tells you everything and how to set them up. Let me know how this worked for you and please do not forget to rate my service so we are able to improve on it.The rating as follows 1 the service was not related to the post. 2 the service was related but not did not help at all. 3 the service was to the point and somewhat complete. 4 the service was excellent and to the point. http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/Public/files/dlf/doc000400/ALLFAX_UsaEng_PrinterUG.pdf
Is this fax line shared with the phone? I believe there is a distictive ring setting in the add'l functions area under communication settings then receive settings. you would need to select a ring pattern different so the fax can tell between which types of calls it is receiving.
