SOURCE: Hot water heater restarts then turns off. This

Service technician is probably best bet for troubleshooting all possible causes from plumbing leak to burner assembly needing cleaned to blower problem to bad gas control valve or tripped ECO, or combination of things listed above.

The intelli vent controller has error codes.
Open link for images, error codes and sample manual.

I think the Kenmore is a Rheem product, but the market changes very fast.
Intellivent control indicates that water heater has a blower on top of heater that communicates with the gas control valve to coordinate combustion.
Rheem recommends the burner assembly be cleaned no less than once a year by trained service technician who has the tools and experience.

Newer gas water heaters, both tank and tankless are maintenance heavy because of energy and safety standards, and because of new electronic controls. Tankless require more frequent attention.

If problem is going to cost more than $330, then install new gas water heater yourself from local box store. I recommend avoiding electronics, and blowers, and tankless so you can hold down costs and maintain the unit yourself.

Water heater electronics and energy factor are good initial selling points, but all costs are energy, and repairs, service and parts of more sophisticated machines can cost more than the $1 to $8 saving you can expect under best circumstance.

I have a AO Smith GPS 75 200. The power is on, however the temp control does not light up and nothing is working. Is the White Roger thermostat gas valve shot, is there some test I could do to make sure...

You have AO Smith tank-type power vent water heater with FVIR flame arrestor.
1) I believe this system has White Rodgers intellivent gas valve, with led indicator lights.
To test if valve is operational:
-NORMAL operating mode displays no lights on gas valve.
-Unplug unit from electrical outlet and plug back in. All lights on gas control should display for 1-5 seconds.
-Press BOTH Hotter and Colder temperature buttons for one second to 'wake up' the control, and release buttons and LED will display temperature.
-Press Hotter or Colder and see if any indicator light shows on gas valve.
This will give baseline if gas valve is functioning.
-Intellivent gas valve requires outlet that is wired 100% correctly. Test outlet with circuit analyzer.
-Water heater must be properly grounded for intellivent to operate.

2) Open following link to identify gas valve and download possible service manual with error codes and testing procedure. Service manual is a large file and will probably not load on dial-up.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html#intelli

3) Open following link for AO Smith manuals and service handbooks.
Shows same intellivent service manual, and shows manuals for power vent, but does not specifically list the GPS75 series

Is there a reset button for a 6G50NVH-FV-02 hot water heater

Depends on gas control valve, and if cause is overheating high-limit event or FVIR flammable vapor event.
Turn off water heater when using flammable vapors, clean burner parts to prevent overheating.

1) GSW Residential power vent gas water heater with FVIR system:
Some models have intelli-vent gas contol
Others have robershaw gas control with auto-reset

2) Parts manual shows #15 'auto-reset' high limit switch on the blower
http://www.gswpartsonline.com/model/27484
http://www.gswpartsonline.com/schematic/137/view

3) Possible manual:
http://www.gsw-wh.com/pdfs/GPD135NInstall.pdf
Shows resettable lockout page 15
Water temperature must be 120 degree F or lower for reset. Unplug power cord, and then plug back in and wait 15 minutes or 60 minutes depending on gas control valve.
Some intelli-vent controls must be replaced when 195 degree high limit event locks out the water heater.
If high-limit lockout repeats, then gas control must be replaced.
Also clean burner parts, air intake, and make sure flame is clear blue. and not yellow-or-orange.

4) Intelli-vent service manual might apply to your water heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Intellivent-service-manual.pdf

If FVIR flammable vapor event locked out heater, then unplug heater and plug back in.
Immediately press two temperature buttons. Wait for green light to blink. Release buttons.

I have an A. O. Smith Model FPSH 40-261 hot water heater. It won't heat water. there is a green light on the control flashing. What does it mean?

AO Smith uses the Honeywell ICON gas valve with green indicator light.
Some models use White Rodgers Intellivent with a row of indicator lights.

The gas control blinks the error code:

Hello Mike,
Check gas pressure, burner parts need to be cleaned, check electrical outlet, hot surface igniter is bad

White Rodgers intellivent error code:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html#Intellivent
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Intelli-vent-gas-valve2.pdf

Error code says: system in lockout, but you know that.
1) Low gas pressure, no gas to water heater: call gas company to check pressure
2) Hot surface igniter not positioned correctly: inspect and clean burner parts.

3) Low voltage to water heater/ outlet has wrong polarity: Use circuit analyzer on electrical outlet to make sure polarity is correct

1) Typical instructions for Kenmore and AO Smith water heater with Intelli-vent say:
Set on-off switch to ON position.
Hold down both arrow buttons for 1 second.
Then press hotter button.

2) Also check that 120Volt electrical outlet has power, and check outlet with cheap circuit analyzer from home center.
3) If Intelli-vent gas valve thermostat is malfunctioning, and won't reset, then contact manufacturer of water heater for replacement gas valve.
Label on side of tank will have Model number, manufacturer, type of gas LP NG, serial number for part ordering.

I have a white Rodgers ac thermostat and the temperature in my apartment stays on 88 no matter how low I set the temp. If I turn it off, of course it gets even hotter. This started happening when I pressed...

I'm not quite sure I understand what you have done but, make sure your compresor(outside is running and, that you don't have the thermostat set to "fan". You want the display to show "cool" and then adjust your temp. It sounds like you have the system set to fan and not cool. Provide me with a model number and I will see about getting you a manual.

Flammable sensor is lit and won't go off. I replaced the sensor how do i reset the controller?

Certain water gas water heater models feature electronic controls with a flammable vapor sensor installed on the bottom portion of the water heater unit. This sensor is designed to shut off your water heater system to prevent fires in case flammable vapors are present within the area. If your flammable vapor sensor caused your water heater to shut down, check the area immediately for leaking gas or other flammable products. Common household chemicals such as bleach can also trip the safety system as well as unsuccessful burner ignition attempts. I'm not sure what control your unit has, but on a White Rodgers here's how it goes.

White Rodgers Intelli-Vent PowerVent Control Equipped Models
  1. Step 1 Turn the water heater's blower switch off and disconnect the power cord for the water heater (refer to your particular model's operation guide for the exact location of the blower switch). Disconnect the Molex connector attached to the bottom of the control pad (the left most connector with five pins).
  2. Step 2 Turn on your multi-meter and set it to read resistance or "ohms". Connect one of the multi-meter's probes to the number two pin and the other probe to the number three pin of the Molex connector (middle black wires). If the reading on your multi-meter reads below 9k or above 45k ohms, the flammable vapor sensor is faulty and in need of replacement; you cannot reset the system until this issue is resolved.
  3. Step 3 Reconnect the Molex connector to the bottom of the control pad, reconnect the water heater's power if and turn the blower switch to the "ON" position. Press both the left and right buttons on the control pad at the same time. Wait for the green light on the control pad to blink and press the following buttons in sequence: Left, Right, Left, Left, Right, Left, Right, Right (you will need to perform these actions within 30 seconds of reconnecting the power cord to the water heater in order to be successful
