Is the flash gun set to your camera model.
If so, the flash may be faulty. Take it to any good camera store and they may be able to fix it for you

Is seem a little bit strange but it worked for fine me
The problem is mechanical. The zoommirror in the flashhead is stuck. Mostly it is a minor opstacel. That is the reason that sometimes the problem is solved by placing new batteries. The zoommotor has a little bit more power en can overcome the minor opstacel.
When the zoom is blocked it cannot be controled by the stering software and therefore it gives an error.
Solution
1. remove flash from our camera (power off).
2. knok with something hard, I used my fingerknuckle, on the side of your flash head.
3. repeat that for each side (i knocked twice on each side).
4. place our flasher on the camera and power on both.
5. If the problem isn't solved repeat it

It worked for me the first time.

I have the same problem a few days ago. what i did was to give the zoom head a slight thug on with my palm. this will release the mechanism inside from being stuck. i think this is a slight mechanical problem with new metz flashes.

i have a 30D and a Metz 48 AF1.

I had the same problem, combining an Olympus with the 58AF-1.
While reading the comments about the motor strength I had an idea: I replaced my normal rechargeable batteries for a moment with normal good quality AA cells.
Because these are stronger the motor had enough power to overcome the problem...
After removing the error I placed back the normal rechargeable AA cells.

Metz 58 AF with Nikon d90 wont flash

Hi, Bad news for you.

Try this.
  1. put new batteries in flash.
  2. turn flash on off camera.
  3. listen for capacitor to squeal (high pitched whistle). If you hear it it is charging. If not capacitor is bad.
  4. Also should see flash ready light come on. If it does not same as #3 above.
  5. If you pass #3 & 4# above press manual flash/check/test button on flash. No flash means bulb is out. It can be replaced.
Hope this fixed ya. Please rate. Good Luck! Comment back if you need further assistance.

Err at the place where zoom value displays in LCD

Though I am sure your solution may have been fixed already.

The guide that the reflector moves along for the Zoom.. has probably been knocked off position (either the guide/rail or the "runner" of the reflector).

External Flash for 3000Z

I have tried a couple of external flashes on the 3000Z. It is my understanding from reading various Internet posts (and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong) that, other than triggering the flash to go off, there is no communication between the external flash in the hot shoe of the 3000Z and the 3000Z itself. Settings need to be made manually in the manual mode to set the f-stop and the aperture to get good exposures. The Metz flashes are expensive. Most have opted to use less expensive flashes such as the Vivitar 283/383, or a Sunpak, or even a "Wal-mart" flash. I chose an inexpensive bounce flash with a secondary "fill-in" flash to get rid of the shadows sometimes seen with indoor bounce flash pics. I purchased the Phoenix 82ZBDA Multi-dedicated twin flash from Porter's Photo Catalogue for $37.95. This flash works fine, but is not that powerful (GN 79 ). If you need a more powerful flash, you might consider the Vivitar 383.
