Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

Try assigning your laptop a static IP. To do this in Windows:

  • Open Windows Start menu.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Classic view: Open Network Connections
Category view: Select Network and Internet Connections, and thenNetwork Connections.
  • Double-click on your active LAN or Internet connection.
  • Click Properties
  • In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and clickProperties.
  • In the General tab, click Use the following IP address, and enter: - IP address. The static IP address you want to assign to this computer (try 192.168.1.110 to start). - Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router (try 255.255.255.0 to start). - Default gateway. IP address of your router's default gateway (try 192.168.1.1 to start).
  • In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router uses (or you can try your router's address, probably 192.168.1.1).
  • Click OK.

You may have to remove the old Local Area Connection from windows, and resetup the network to use the new card. Bar that, if you remember your old IP address on your private network, you could setup the new Nic's IP address to the old IP address.

How To Check A Dead One ?

If you mean it's completely dead with no power, first check the AC adapter if this model uses one (I think it does). Then open the case and check for obvious things like bad solder joints at the adapter power jack or other places in the power supply. Look for visibly bad parts (burned resistors, capacitors with bulgy or split tops, etc.). Most of these devices have pretty simple power supplies: rectifier diodes, filter capacitors and a regulator or two. You should be able to follow the circuit on the board and see where the voltage is missing.

If the problem is anything other than a simple part failure in the power supply, then don't waste more time trying to repair it. You won't have any luck finding parts or service information, and replacement cost is low enough to make it uneconomical to put much effort into the repair.

The WPA key is the encryption key that is configured in the router's wireless settings and the wireless cards in the laptop and desktop needs to be configured with this encryption setting to allow the laptop and desktop computer to communicate with the router.
You can view the encryption settings in the router's wireless settings or on the laptop's wireless card settings and then apply these encryption settings to the desktop's wireless card (ie. the SSID and the WPA encryption).

As you already know, the adpater has been discontinued, but D-Link has the drivers online for OS's thru XP. Follow this link, choose the tab on the right "Support Resources" and you will find the drivers. While this is for the 500TX, it will work for the 528TX.
