GE Refrigerator model GSS22WGPH whines loudly!

It sounds like it might be when it auto defrosts or something but it goes on forever and its so loud. Is that what its doing and is there a way to stop it

Its loudest in the freezer. Sounds like its behind the ice maker.

When the freezer fan come on (probably defrosting) I get a low pitch "whistling" noise similiar to what you would hear if a window was open a crack on a windy day. It has done this since it was new.

Where does the noise come from? Inside the refrigerator, or outside?

Please state the origination point of the noise more clearly.

Sounds like the evap fan motor has a bearing going bad. Best to replace. Easy to for anyone who can use a screw or nut driver to do.

I think GE knows it has a problem with this. I had the mother board (which supplies the DC power) and evaporator motor replaced. Since my unit was only 2 years old, GE picked up the cost of the parts and I paid for the labor.

Loud noise from GE Side by Side

That's usually mounts inside the compressor. It could still last awhile so if you can put up with the noise just wait for it to quit before replacing the compressor or getting a new fridge.

GE GSS22WGPH WW won't defrost

I am sure you can do this yourself, Jeff. The test procedure is as follows. Bypass the defrost thermostat (round thingy strapped to evaporater ) place the frig into defrost by manually turning the timer with a screwdriver clockwise untill you hear a loud click. You should be in defrost mode now. If the heater element comes on then you have a bad defrost thermostat. If they do not come on then the element is bad. You can check element for continuity with an ohm meter. The defrost timer rarely goes out but they occasionally do. Wait to see if the timer comes back out of defrost on its own. Takes about five to ten minutes .If it does not, then you can visually inspect timer. There is a sight window on the back of timer that should be spinning if motor is good. Hope this helps

Hi,

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.
