You don't want to overtighten since you could crack the porcelain. Are your rubber washers in good shape? This will help. You should be able to do this w/out doing any damage.

Strange that it went, but do you still have it? If so, bring it to your plumbing supply store and they should be able to match it up. Not sure why Home Depot can't help though. If you do not have it, bring the tank so they can try it right there. Good luck and make sure you don't overtighten when reassembling (can crack easier than you think). Can always tighten, but never loosen when it's too late.

My husband and I have this toilet, it apparently has many complaints along the same lines. We just called American Standard and they're sending out all new parts for inside the tank.
