Since you didn't specify the model of your VTech 5.8GHz phone I can only suggest you enter it into the search box here to download a copy of the manual.

How do I change the outgoing message for the answering machine?

Without the exact model number from the bottom label I'm guessing this excerpt from a Vtech manual should be close enough to get you started:

Record your own announcement
You can record an announcement up to 90 seconds, but announcements shorter than two seconds will not be recorded.

1.Press "MENU/SELECT" when the handset is not in use.
    2.Press <Up Arrow> or <Down Arrow> to highlight ">Answering sys", then press "MENU/SELECT".
    3.Press "MENU/SELECT" to select ">Announcement".
    4.Press <Up Arrow> or <Down Arrow> to highlight ">Record annc", then press "MENU/SELECT".
5.The system announces, "Record after the tone. Press 5 when you are done" and the screen shows RECORDING ANNC... 5-Stop.
6.After the tone, speak towards the handset microphone.
7.Press 5 when done. The answering system automatically plays back the newly recorded announcement, then returns to the previous menu. -OR-
7.Press "OFF/CANCEL" to exit without saving the recording.
If you have lost your origional manual you can get a replacement from the Vtech support site here:
