Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

Hi, I had a fire in my apartment a few weeks ago when I was not home. The fire department broke in and determined the heat source to be the electric stove. The stove came on and burnt some material that was resting above it on a counter. The strange thing is, I had never used the stove and the fire department confirmed that none of the knobs were turned to the on position. Just before the fire started, my neighbor flipped the breakers because his stove was not working; shortly after he did this, he saw smoke coming from my apartment and called 911. Has anyone ever heard of an electic stove coming on after flipping the breaker and without actually turning it on?

Perhaps it's the case that the stove didn't actually turn on, but emitted sparks after the breaker was flipped? I suppose that is more plausible. It's just so hard to figure out since no one was there to witness it.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid electric stove - knob doesn't want to

Sounds if the wires that connect to the knob is touching some metal, turn off the breaker, and remove the panel, you will find that something is touching, and it will have a burnt spot where it is touching. It may be two wires or the connector, touching, this is what is tripping the breaker, or the control knob itself may be bad and need replacing.

There is a flow sensor in the circuit and it is not sensing the lower flow from just the hot water. When you put it on heat though it does.

My son spilled a drink on his laptop (yesterday) and now it wont turn on at all. do you think it will dry out? we only bought it a few weeks ago and it was expensive!

Hi

Thank you for your query

Unfortunatley it is one of these issues where you will have to wait, I would try to place the laptop near a warm heat source (please note this is done at your own risk in the sense that it is NOT to be put near a gas fire or any other appliance where it can catch fire), to dry up and then you can retry

If alot of drink was spilt then it will probably have seeped pass the keyboard down into the internals

If it is only a few weeks old did you purchase some sort of accidental cover? as you may be able to get it exchanged, to be honest it may be worth trying to exchange it anyway as it is only a few weeks old the manager of the store may allow it

I hope this has been useful

There should be a label that tells you that. Most home dryers are 120

Heats when unit is not on

Same thing just happened to my DEGX1. I took it apart and one of the heating elements had broken and fell to the bottom of the metal case. I think it was creating a short to ground and making it heat. I removed the broken element wires and attached them back best I could and did a test run with no problems. It is not heating when off now either. searspartsdirect.com had the elements for $67 so I ordered a set and will replace both of them (part #395583). My dryer is only 4 years old and 3 weeks ago the driver belt broke. Irritating they can't make them last any longer these days.

All TV's in house failing, a few at a time

Hey PNorris,

If multiple electronic devices are failing in your home all at once, I would probably first have to ask if your home recently experienced an electrical storm or major power surge of any kind.

Normally the effects of such large-scale surges are immediately noticeable - TV's and other major electronic devices may fail to turn on, fuses may be blown or circuit breakers tripped, and in some cases electrical wiring may be melted.

If nothing like this has happened recently, low-level power surges may still be a potential cause of this problem. When the motor from any large appliance (such as an air conditioner or refrigerator) turns on or off, it often diverts power to and from other electronic devices using the same circuits. This fluctuation in electrical current may result in low-level power surges to every connected device. While not immediately noticeable, these low-level surges can often cause the eventual failure of (and gradually degrading quality in) many audio/video components.

Typically, the easiest way to avoid situations like this is to make sure that outlets are not overloaded and surge protectors are used with every major electrical device in your home. For older homes however, replacing the house's wiring may be necessary. Homes that were originally built at the turn of the 20th century may not always have wiring capable of supporting the electrical needs of many modern appliances.

Ultimately, this means that in addition to contacting your local TV repair facility, you may want to also speak with an electrician. This is probably the best way to determine whether or not power surges have caused these failures, and may give you a better idea how to proceed.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

It could if the separator is binding, or dragging, when it turns, causing the motor to over heat, that maybe what you are smelling. If it is, then replace the separator.
