To repair missing or corrupted system file/s, boot up with the Windows installation CD then - Press R to repair when instructed. Press 1 or Enter to repair the C:\Windows folder. Then type chkdsk /r and then press Enter. The repair process will take quite a long time.

You'll need an XP CD at a minimum, boot to recovery console, run the command BOOTCFG /REBUILD
see if the system boots
It may also have a bad hard disk drive

SOURCE: i switch on my dell latitude and missing or

It seems you got this problem on Windows XP, so it's recomended that you boot with a Windows XP instalation disk and start the setup process. After you switch on your Dell laptop, press F12 key to choose and boot from CD-ROM, place the Windows Installation CD on your CD-ROM drive and press ENTER. A "press ENTER or a KEY to start the installation process" will appear and press it. Then the Windows Setup peogrm will begin, wait until a menu screen shows up and press R key to start the Recovery Console utility. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/en-us A prompt cursor should appear and select the number of the Windows installation you want to fix. Ussually "1" If it ask you for ADMINISTRATOR password, typed if it exists or simply press ENTER and you need to write the following commands:
attrib -R-H-S C:\boot.ini and press ENTER
then type:
del C:\boot.ini and press ENTER
then:
bootcfg /rebuild and press ENTER
and finally type:
fixboot and press ENTER and restart your Dell laptop.

Also you may try to run a PC Restore on your Dell Latitude 620 pressing ctrl+F11 during the DELL splash screen appear, ( a DELL blue bar should appear on the upper side of the screen ) but only if you already have a backup of your data.

Thanks

You need to repair your windows, with either using Recovery or get the external CD then reinstall operating system. Hal.dll usually still in your system32 folder but corrupted..

Have acer aspire one, when started got screen saying file missing or corrupt window root system 32 hal.dll, nothing else cannot bring up safe mode do not have windows xp cd, in nursing home cannot afford...

I am going to start with the assumption you have already tried to reboot, then next choices from there go kinda like this...

Run windows XP restore from command prompt. (From safe ,mode type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press Enter. If this doesn't work or you're receiving the hal.dll error message before you're able to complete this process, move on to the next step.

Replace the boot.ini file (run msconfig) This will work if the cause of the problem is actually Windows XP's boot.ini file and not the hal.dll file, which is often times the case.

Note: If repairing the boot.ini does correct the hal.dll issue but the problem reappears after a reboot and you've recently installed Internet Explorer 8 in Windows XP, uninstall IE8. In this specific situation, IE8 could be the root cause of your hal.dll problem.

Right click on c: drive, click on properties, then tools, click on the error checking button, the put a checkmark in each box, Click start and it may say it needs to run on next reboot click OK the reboot. The physical part of your hard drive that stores any part of the hal.dll file has been damaged, you're likely to see errors like this.

Run a repair install of the operating system. This type of installation should replace any missing or corrupt files. Continue troubleshooting if this does not resolve the issue.

When I turn my Gateway Profie 3 computer on, it will not boot up and displays the message: "WIndows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt Windows^Root^\System32\ hal.dll....

Hi There,

Sounds like you're running XP bercause the hal.dll issue is almost always an XP issue. It's not the easiest thing to fix. Most often you need access to a floppy drive and floppy disc or you have to create a bootable CD that fools the computer into thinking it's a floppy with the replacement installer for hal.dll.

I recommend you read the info at the site below and decide whether to attempt the fix yourself or get assistance at your location.

How to solve this problem <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Hi
If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive that is misconfigured
1.Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2.At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3.Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4.Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
5.Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
6 Take out the CD ROM and type exit
OR
Better solution: This seems to always work
expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ y:\windows\system32\ X= cd rom drive letter

Thanks and Regards Aboobacker S

Keep getting this message <window

Hello,
  • "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "Cannot find \Windows\System32\hal.dll"

  • "Cannot find hal.dll"
The "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error displays shortly after the computer is first started. Windows XP has not yet fully loaded when this error message appears. CauseCauses of the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error include, naturally, a damaged hal.dll DLL file or a hal.dll file that has been deleted or moved from its intended location.Additional causes may include a damaged or missing boot.ini file or possibly a physically damaged hard drive.

Please let me know you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks.

HAL.DLL Missing or Corrupt

If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive that is misconfigured

Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Missing or corrupt \system32\hal.dll

You didn't need to replace the hard drive if there is a missing NTLDR file, it just means that the boot sector is missing or corrupt. You can fix it by putting in your WinXP CD, and choosing REPAIR.(This is known as the Recovery Console and it's in DOS just to warn you...) Then you can type the following at the dos prompt: fixmbr - Fixes corrupt master boot record fixboot - Fixes corrupt boot sector bootcfg /rebuild - Fixes corrupt or missing boot.ini
