Yes, you can use a two speed, although they cost significantly more than a single speed. It surprises me that a single speed motor is not available. Wire the motor for Hi speed, which has the same RPMs as a single speed motor.

SOURCE: What does SF mean on pool and spa pumps?

SF stands for Service Factor. It has to do with how much overload your motor can handle without damage. Here is some information about it:

You should not be feeling any "trickle" of electricity. You are correct...it is NOT SAFE! I would definitely have another qualified electrician check your wiring out.

Thanks for using Fixya.

SOURCE: Pump will not work in high speed

Clean the relay contacts on the board. Cut the power, ofcourse. Also, try switching the hot wire on the low side of the pump to the high side to rule out the pump.

More often than not red is high and black is low. The white is the common and of course green is ground. If High and low are backwards, swap the red and black.

Pump will not start on low speed

It sounds to me as though there may be a problem with the small run capacitor on the motor. If that has failed the motor will fail to start on low speed.

The motor shop should know what they're doing as this is a common motor issue. Take it back to them and explain the problem to them.

Kind Regards,
Ian Kime.
