Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

Component Cable problem

I went on a trip and took my ps3 with me. When we got there, the component cables werent working. I couldnt get either the sound or the video working. I went out and bought brand new component cables, and they still didnt work. Once I got home, I tried to plug the ps3 back into my TV and the component cables, both old and new, werent working. Before I left for my trip, the component cables were having a hard time making a connection to the back of the ps3. Did I jiggle something loose or is this a major problem? Would it be cheaper to have it sent to sony or will I have to buy a brand new system?

My playstation 3 will not play in 1080p. It used to work, but when we switched cables, it wont work in HD.

When you switched cables, you mean you changed the cord running from the PS3 to the TV? HD content requires an HDMI connection from the PS3 to the TV. It is possible that when you changed cables, you replaced the PS3's HDMI cable with Component Cables which can only deliver in Standard Definition and not in High Definition (720p, 1080i and 1080p).

I had my PS3 hooked up using a HDMI cable and it worked fine. Upon moving I had to switch to Component cables and now I dont get any picture or sound. Can you help?

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you are using component cable on your Ps3 you need to set the input of your Tv to Component Mode. Use the Remote of the Tv look for a Source or Input button then select Component Input.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya.

My ps3 seems to b working fine but i cant see anything. no matter which tv i plug it into it says that there is no signal

Hi aztecruler12,

For you to be able to see a picture on the screen you need to make sure that you're on the right input. Inputs on your televsion depends on the cables that you are using. PS3 supports HDMI and Component Cable (Blue/Green/Red). If you're using HDMI Cable to connect the PS3 to your TV then you need to select HDMI Input and if you're using a Component Cable it should be Component Input. To change the input you need to use the original remote of your television. Look for Input or Source button and select the input depends on your cable.

Rate me if this helps so i can help others. Thanks for using Fixya.

Do i need the hdmi cable inorder for the ps3 to work? when i brought the system i tried it out and it worked just fine, then when i took it home it didnt work... is i because of the cable?

HDMI cable is a "Component" cable which is as near to HDMI as possible. The cable has 5 plugs on it (make sure your TV has the same 5 plugs). They are available off of eBay

there are series of problem in ps3 which can be solved without much technical knowledge ........ your problem belong to that so dont worry i will give you the link to download the ps3 repair guide that will help you a lot.......

PS3 won't connect to TV with component video.

You need to connect the PS3 to the television with both connectors (HDMI and Component). Then in the display settings change it from HDMI to component and during the 30 seconds that the screen goes black you need to disconnect your HDMI cable from your playstation. Then switch to the input that the component cable is connected to on your television (ie. AV1, AV2, etc). From here you will see the countdown for the test and you can continue with these settings.

Ps3?

Check the couplings at either end of the cable. Sometimes these will loosen and can cause a lack of signal strength.

but its probably not the cable, its probably the ps3. HDMI cables don't really break because they are just wires, they don't have moving parts. Try connecting your PS3 to your TV with the regular cable red, white, and yellow connectors that you got when you bough the PS3. If the PS3 doesn't work with the original red, white, and yellow connectors then you know its the PS3. If the PS3 does work fine, you know its either the HDMI cable (still unlikely) or the HDMI connection on your TV or PS3 (more likely

No Picture, Only sound

You need to tell the PS3 that you are now using the new video method. It is still trying to output video on the yellow cable, not the component. If you go to settings>video and tell it to use component, and then switch the cables real quick, it should work.

An easier solution is to do a backup from the system menu, then a "restore" (quick restore is fine), and then power it off, hook up the new cable, and it will detect the video method when it turns on for the "first" time (since the restore).

You do have component input on your TV, and that is the input you are on when you are trying this, yes?
