I have a Meade ETX-70. When turned on, the handset says there is a Motor Unit Fault: Motor failure detected due to moving handset between scopes, low battery level, obstructed or overloaded scope. I've...

This is usually caused by low battery power-- as the hand controller reported. DO NOT USE rechargeable batteries they do not have enough volts. Use alkaline batteries only.

This can also be caused by a broken gear or a failed internal motor. You can return these to Meade for repair.

1st time user. Images are upside down. What do I do?

They are supposed to be upside down, this is how a telescope works. There are additional lenses that can be purchased on some telescopes that flip the image to make it look rightside up, not sure on yours but you can check the web or hobby shops for these. Nothing wrong with your scope, just doing what it is supposed to do.
If you find my advice helpful a vote on the thumbs up would be greatly appreciated, this helps me help more people. Thanks

First thing to try is a NEW hand controller cable. If this does not fix it, then you have an electrical short or bad circuit board inside. Only Meade can repair this.

Try the cable before you panic.

No, only Meade sells a replacement hand controller.... but if you burned out the internal board it is not worth fixing. Here is Meade's customer service phone number:

I have an older Meade LX200 GPS with autostar II handset. The telescope was working fine and last night I got an error message on the handset "Error: Inv. Heap" and the telescope locks up with no further...

You may have Corrupted firmware in the hand controller- that's why they want you to do a RESET.

You might have to reload the correct firmware to fix this problem.

I believe if you hold down the ENTER KEY and the SCROLL DOWN arrow key and then turn on the scope you enter SAFE LOAD where you can reload the firmware.

Bought the scope about 4 years ago. Fairly light use and not used in last 12 months. Was checking it recently and replaced batteries etc. Horizontal motor movement is fine however no vertical motor...

Do a RESET on the hand controller. Re-enter Time, Date, and SITE, and CALIBRATE motors.

Also sometimes a bad hand controller cable will cause this. You can buy another cable directly from Meade. Call them here:

Computer control and pointing with NorthStar Goto & Autostar

Your reseller is correct. The wire (Meade cable #505) goes from an RS232 serial port on PC to a 4pin RJ plug. This plugs into the 2nd socket on the bottom of an Autostar 497 handset, the other socket being used for the curly lead to the telescope. So it goes PC to Autostar to telescope.

A common error is to try plugging the serial wire into an "AUX" ort on the telescope control panel - same connector. Not only does this not work, it can cause a lot of damage.

Wired like this you can control the scope from Meade's Autostar Suite (or many other planetarium softwares). You can also update the Autostar software to the latest 2009 version.

What else can go wrong? Well, many people want to control from a laptop, and modern ones don't have RS232 serial ports. Then you need a USB-to-serial convertor dongle, which effectively add a serial port to a laptop. But they often give it a very high port number (eg COM17) that the planetarium software does not find. Use Control Panel to reset the USB-serial-port to COM 1, 2, 3 or 4 and all should be well. But it can be a right fiddle!

Motors dont work even with new batteries

I had the same problem. I removed the motor and drive assembly and used a pair of pilers to gently rotate the drive gear a few times in both directions. I re-installed it and it began to work again. I also noticed that the grease on the drive gear and shaft was very thick. Cleaned and up and re-applied a lithium based grease and it helped even more. Be sure to remove all old grease from the aluminium block that the drive gear shaft rest in. Good luck.
