How do you enable security for linksys wireless routers

  1. Type "" into your Internet browser, and press "Enter."
  2. When login page opens up, type the username and password for your wireless router.Depending on your router brand, you may have "admin" and "password" as the respective default username and password. But again, you must refer to your wireless router support manual.
  3. Once logged in, click "Wireless Security" and Select "WEP" as the security encryption type
  4. Set the default transmit key to "1".
  5. Type in a passphrase and click "Generate". This generates random passkeys.
  6. Note down your network's SSID (listed on the security page) and the first WEP key. This is the information that you will need when trying to allow new connection through the wireless network.

Can't use wireless due to possibly forgot password.

If you do not have the Network SSID and Passkey, you will need to logon to your Router (via a cable connection) as an administrator to get the information from the Wireless Security setup screen.

The other way, would be to look at another PC/LAPTOP/SMARTPHONE which can connect to this Router and look at the Wireless Setup SSID , Encription (WEP or WPA or WPA2, etc) and Passkey. Passkey is normally not displayed but there is usually an option to 'display the characters'.

Hope it helps and good luck!

I have forgot my passkey for others to connect wireless - how can I change the passkey?

So you've lost the password that you set up for your linksys router and no one remembers it. Generally you can do two things. Buy a new wireless router or you can reset the router to it's factory default and then save the password before you forget again.

I do not remember the passkey code?

You can reset the Linksys back to the factory defaults and the login to the wireless settings and create a new passphrase key.
Power up the router and press the pinhole RESET button at the back of the router for 30 secs.
Open a browser and enter the configuration URL enter the default login and password, you should change the password then go to the wireless settings to change the encryption passphrase and SSID etc.

New password

In order to enter passwords, and secure your wireless network, you must log onto your wireless router's configuration settings page (the webpage used to initially setup the router). To get to this page, you must enter the router's ip address ( by default for Linksys routers) as the url (i.e. Once you do this, you will be asked for a username and password (Username: admin, or <blank>, and Password: admin, by default). Successfully logging in should bring you to the router's settings page. From here, you can go to the administrator tab, change the login password**, or go to the wireless tab, wireless security sub-tab, select a type of encryption if desired (WPA2-Personal/PSK or WPA recommended), and set the desired passkey**.
**NOTE: When changing settings, before going to another page, make sure to click Save Settings at the bottom of each page to keep the settings.
Here is a page to help with what you can do in order to secure the router further.
