Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

Vaillant Mag 325 warm water only full pres. cold low pressure

Adjustments help some but burner goes off when faucets are turned down. I bought it used and just installed it. It has been settin for about five years. Does it require a small hot water tank to feed into or is there a problem with the water control valve.

You need a certain amount of water pressure for the water heater to turn on this is actaully one of the biggest problems that all manifactures forgot to tell anyone it is normal for the computer to shut down beings it is designed to heat water at a fast rate when you turn the water down, it's not enough pressure for for sensors to turn on to heat the water so turn on the spigot a little more and enjoy

The burner won't light but the pilot stays on fine.Have good pressure and flow. Could the pressure or flow sensor be stuck. Where is it?
    Thanks

I have to turn the hot water tap on full open to get hot water

Type of water heater is unknown
If you have single-handled faucet the faucet cartridge might be bad.
If you have recirculation system, then check valve might be bad.

Hi, I have the 1600 NG tankless water heater. Everything works great, but I installed low flow hot faucets throughout the house and now the igniter will not click on. It works for the washing machine. ...

http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Bosch-Tankless-water-heater.html#flow
1) Tankless require minimum flow rate before burner will activate.
2) Sounds like the water pressure drops quickly when faucet turns on. This implies combination of problems including sediment build up inside lines, crossover at single-handled faucet, or sediment filter clogged or water softener clogged.
3) Low flow faucets can reduce needed flow rate.
4) Other problems can contribute: sensor failure, loose wires, PC board failure, high temperature setting, cold incoming water temperature during winter months.

Before calling service technician, open following link for Rheem troubleshooting resources.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html

List of causes MIGHT include one of following:
Bad household circuit breaker that powers electronics, or loose wire inside outlet where tankless plugs in.
Tankless fuses and control board.
Water flow rate too low. Minimum .8 gallon required (depending on model)
Tankless inlet filter clogged.
Household aerators clogged at faucets.
Crossover at single-handled faucet
If installed, there can be crossover at mixing valve.
Faulty household check valve, including check valve on re-circulation system if that system is installed.
Restriction in household water line, such as clog at elbow.
Unequal pressure in household hot and cold lines, caused by restriction in hot line. When single-handled faucet turns on, the cold water pressure is higher so hot does not flow and tankless will not turn on.
Loose wire connection inside tankless.
Unit temperature set too high.
Unit temperature set too low.
Water temperature is very hot coming out of tap, so more cold is added, but that reduces amount of hot water flow, so tankless turns off because flow rate is too low.
On some tankless, if water is preheated by solar or other indirect source, the burner will not activate.
High mineral content in water > delime tankless yearly
Misaligned temperature sensor
Low gas pressure. Wrong type of gas. Undersized gas line.
Too many faucets on at same time.
Faulty tankless water valve. Water valve stuck.
Fluctuating household water pressure, for example MUD and PUD district water pressure problems or water well pressure.
Faulty household pressure reducing/regulating valve if installed.
Faulty household pressure tank, if installed -or- pressure tank needs to be installed.

The water is luke warm and the pressure is lower than ususal.

We probably need more information to give a good answer.
You report 2 different problems occurring at once: Low pressure and Low temperature.
If this is tankless water heater, then Low pressure and Low temperature might be related, and you probably need a service technician to diagnose and repair cause.

If this is tank-type water heater, look at label on side of tank for type and brand of heater.
Is it gas or electric water heater? Troubleshooting is totally different for each.

Is water pressure pressure low on just the hot side faucet, or is cold side faucet affected too?
Are all hot faucets affected by low pressure?
If you have a dual handle faucet, open hot side only and check if hot water that comes out is hot as normal.
This will say if problem is pressure or temperature.
Tank-type water heater usually won't have both these problems occur at one time, but water heaters work in funny ways sometimes.

Hi i have installed a few bosch gas geysers at our lodge in mozambique. The problem is that the water gets hot when we turn the water on then the heat just shuts off and the water gets cold after a short...

The problem with all that type of water heater is that once the hot tap is turned on sufficient flow must be maintained through the water heater to keep the main gas burner alight. If the heat adjuster is turned up to high, then the person using the hot water will turn it down to a low rate which means the main burner will turn off and result in cold water. Try setting the heat control to the lowest setting that still gives hot enough water. If you have a thermometer adjust control for a temperature of around 50 to 55 degrees Celcius. You may have to fiddle with fine adjustments to get the temperature and flow rates to maintain a constant output of hot water. You may still have intermittent problems. If the heater only supplies baths or showers you could set the temperatuer even lower (45 to 50) to ensure that the hot tap is used more than the cold which will maintain flow and therefore heat.

Our water keeps fluctuating between hot and cold. The hot water will not stay on. It lasts about 1 minute and then turns to cold. After about 2-3 minutes it will get hot again?

The inlet line to the water heater goes to the bottom of the water heater to prevent the cold incoming water from mixing with the heated water at the top. The tube going to the bottom can come loose.

Turn the water off and relieve the pressure by opening a faucet and remove the fitting where the water enters the heater. You can see if the pipe is still connected.

I can't turn the bar pressure up on my Vaillant VCW 221 Boiler

on the pipework below there may be a silver braided hose with one or two valves on the end. turn the valve(s) so the handle is inline with the pipe this will allow water from the mains supply into the heating circuit , remember to keep an eye on the pressure gauge. fill the system to 1bar cold then shut down the valve(s). turn on the boiler and it should be ok, if you lose pressure again then you may have a leak somewhere which needs to be found.

Cant get my 50 gal rheem electric water heater to drain to change elements

There is 2 ways to do this.
The first way is to turn off the power. Turn off the incoming water (cold) to the heater. Go to a faucet close to the location. Turn off the cold water supply under the sink. Open the hot water side of the faucet. Allow any water to drain from the faucet. Make sure that the water coming out is not under pressure. You should be able to tell by how it come out. Easy, or forceful. Now go to the heater and open the bottom drain valve. The reason it does not drain very easy is because you have a vacuum. Similar to having a soda bottle full of water and turning it upside down. It will drain but it will "Glug" and drain slow. Opening the hot side of the faucet relieves the vacuum and it should drain o.k. When you are done with your repair, leave the hot side of the faucet open and turn on the incoming water to the heater on. Let it fill till you get a steady stream of water from the faucet. This "Burbs" all air out and ensures the tank is full prior to turning on the power. When you get the steady stream, turn off the faucet and restore power. In some cases, the heater may sweat because you are heating very cold water. This is normal and will only happen this one time.
Now if you want to know the second way, let me know. I've done it dozens of times with plenty of success and minimal mess.
Good Luck
