The tempered glass for my GE oven door facing inside my oven shattered

The outermost layer of tempered glass on my oven door shattered (the explosion happened on the outermost layer facing inside of the oven door) into a million pieces after starting the broiler. The stove is only a year and a half old and I hardly use the oven portion! To replace the part with GE part: WB36M1207 is over $300! Do I have to go with their part? Can I order one on line with the same dimensions thats not for GE? I noticed that a lot of the ones on line are GE compatible just minus the fancy black outlining. Same thing happened to a neighbour and he bought a piece of tempered glass in town for way less and installed himself. GE is still trying to determine whether they will cover this as it is 4 months out of warranty...please help, I am financially strapped and can't afford this now.

Here is the glass you can order for only $95.80!http://bit.ly/Sk46S1

  • Hillo Canada Jan 20, 2013

Hi Richard, I really appreciate your help but when I plug that number in the compatibility bar it says its not compatible...I would hate to drop $100 and have it not fit. Also why is there such a price discrepancy between that part and the part number GE gave me?

Go to this link for appliance parts, put in your model number and you will see that the part does indeed come up for that model. Also, that supplier has a 365 day, any part, any reason return policy so you won't have any problems if you need to return it. That's why I only use that supplier.

Hello, that glass won't fit, I measured the dimensions of the glass being 28x18 also the diagram does not match my door, where that 132 on the diagram is where my glass is, just 2 horizontal brackets hold it there with 3 screws along the bottom. I could send you pics if you want, but I think I'm screwed into paying the $300

Call the phone number on that parts supplier page. They will help you out. I know that they will have what you need and at a cheaper price. $300.00 for a piece of glass is crazy!

  • Hillo Canada Jan 20, 2013

I know, I'm seriously sick about it :( I should call the appliance parts pros.com?

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Jan 21, 2013

Yes, give them a call and be sure to tell them that "Richard Roth, Site ID: 2947040 with Linkshare" referred you to them. Please keep me posted and I will see if I can find it for you thru my local supplier. What are the exact measurements of the glass?

  • Hillo Canada Jan 21, 2013

Unfortunately since it shattered into a million pieces I don't know exactly, but I took the closest measurements I could from the place it sits within the two brackets, and its approx 28 1/4 inches x 17 and 3/4 inches, depth is unknown but the glass was heavy enough to keep the down down, now it just springs back shut whenever I open it. Is it possible to find out what the dimentions are with the GE replacement part, WB36M1270. Unfortunately on line there is no info on it, no diagram, no measurements, go figure for $300!

let me understand, you p[lug in you oven and the broiler will automaticalle start??? not allowing you to cancel???? if that s the case unplug and remove the back panel from tyhe range, sound sas if the wire leading to the broil ignitor has shorted itself against the cabinet of the range itself, look for whiter braided wires at broiler hieght, chances arte they are hitting against hte cabinet right near the vent area.

SOURCE: Door glass shattered 3 hours after cooking

The problem is that the holding screws that secure the glass in place were most likely OVER TIGHTENED.All the screws around the support holders of the glass have to be tightened just right and the glass can cool off without the pressure that makes it pop.

SOURCE: GE OVEN/RANGE INSIDE GLASS ON DOOR SHATTERED.

You will need a window pack, part number WB56T10152 which is not hard to replace. You should be able to order it right from GE, or an appliance repair firm can get it for you, often without extra shipping if they can combine it with other parts they need to order. Should set you back just over $100. You can remove your oven door to make it easier to work on. Use a little screwdriver to pull down the little square hole you will see on the top of the hinge opening on the frame of the oven on each side. That little metal part will lock the hinge open. Next, lift on the door and pull it toward you. The hinge actually stays with the door and lifts right out of the rectangular opening in the oven frame. Reverse procedure to reinstall repaired door.

SOURCE: Door glass shattered 3 hours after cooking

Hi there folks It also happened to me, so after ringing rangemaster they said it can happen due to faults in the glass, unfortunately my warranity had run out and they wanted t charge a fortune to repair. so i had a look inside the door my self which is only four screws on the sides to remove the outer skin to find it was a single piece of ordinary toughend glass about 300mm x 300mm fixed in place with six clips like the ones you find one those glass picture frames, i got a new piece from me local glass merchants for less than £10 and it took only mins to fix job done, I hope this help someone and it my save you quite a bit of cash Cheers folks Markbricky

I have a Frigidaire Caprice double oven, 45 years old, the inner glass panel on the top oven door has shattered. I am not having any luck with finding replacement glass, any ideas?

take a profile of the glass shape (cut out the shape from cardboard) and go to a glass supply shop ( glass windows , doors , shower screens etc)
they should be able to cut and then temper the glass to make it heat proof for the door
if they cannot temper it they should be able to tell you where you can get it done

I depends on how old your oven is. If you're lucky you may be able to get a replacement glass. If not take some measurements and see a glass supplier. You will need a piece of tempered glass.

My oven inside glass door exploded tonight while

Very rare, in 35 years I replace maybe 2 to 5 a year out of 1500 to 2000 repairs a year on all major appliances. Make sure you replace it with the exact glass from the manufacturer, usuing your model number. Do not replace with glass from a glass shop.

How do I replace the shattered glass in my GE oven door

No doubt this is a double paned glass panel. Two panes of glass with a divider strip separating the two for a "thermal break". Okay, you will need to remove the door from the hinges, and along the sides of the door, or possibly under the door gasket, you will find multiple screws that hold the two sandwiched halves of the door together. There should be a front panel, formed sheet steel, and an inner formed sheet steel panel which is coated with porcelin. When you have the front and back halves of the door separated, inside of one or maybe both of the panels you will find the clips, screws, or materials that hold this glass panel in place. Possibly it is in it's own frame, and the frame and glass both remove as one unit. Then it will be a matter of contacting Customer Service and Parts for your product, giving the Model #, Serial # and any other data that may be needed in order to replace the part with the correct one. Since this should be tempered glass, it will be quite heavy and at least 1/4" thick or so. The "thermal break" or space between the panes is so that heat does not transfer readily to the outside panel. Watch for any electrical connections for a door switch for the oven lamp, and be careful when removing the springs which allow the door to close and seal when in the closed position. And it might be helpful to take some photos of the disassembly process so that you can have a reference when you are ready to re-install the door. Be careful when removing the broken glass, and dispose of this carefully. Take your time, be patient, and don't force any thing, and you should be fine. Good lock. Kindest regards, Slats.

TKC 8522/2 top oven outer door shattering

It is not a fault with the door, and this sort of event occurs quite often, so is not uncommon.
All sorts of things can cause this, sudden change in temp, getting the glass wet whilst it is still hot, a knock or bang form an earlier time could have weakened the glass.
The list is quite long..
Depending on your household insurance, some policys cover for breakage of glass fittings, would be worth checking.
Plz rate my solution
.Thanks.
