I was driving in the freezing cold last night in 5th gear when suddenly there was no engagement. 4th and 3rd didn't work either, although 2nd and 1st did. When I tried to shift up to 3rd, 4th, and 5th, none of them engaged. after stopping a few minutes, they all came back and I was able to drive home. Any ideas on why this would happen and if it will again? thanks!
SOURCE: auto transmission will not engage in DRIVE gear when starting.
IT IS THE STRAINER INSIDE THE PAN IN THE TRANSMISSION,WHEN ITS COOL THE FLUID IS TO THICK TO TRAVEL AND GRITTY TO GO THROUGH THE STRAINER SCREEN,BUT WHEN THE TRANNY WARMS THE FLUID ITS THEN ABLE TO FLOW THROUGH THE SCREEN AND SHIFT PROPERLY.

Sounds like low fluid in the hydraulic clutch system, look under the hood next to the firewall on the drivers side should be a small resevior with a black top. Remove the top and check the level, if it gets even slightly low this problem will occur. it takes dot 3 or 4 brake fluid. If it is not low it could be that your slave cylinder is going bad. Also you may need to change out the fluid in your transmission, recomended at 60,000 mile intervals.
SOURCE: have a mazda 323 2001 astina it is a manual gear
Sounds like oil on the clutch plate lining, burned or glazed facings. Could be worn or loose engine or transmission mounts. Sometimes it is worn splines on clutch plat hub or a warped pressure plate or flywheel.

first i assuming where talking about a manual transmission
check the shifter and shifter linkage i would assume it in the shifter it self or who ever did rebuild didnt fix it right
all so assuming when u had transmission repaired u all so replaced (or at least checked) the clutch
if clutch was not replaced when transmission was replaced it should have been unless clutch was just recently replaced
