Question about SimpleTech SimpleDrive   STI-USB235/160 160 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Simpledrive external HD,repeatedly is recognized, then dissconects

I have had my simpledrive 500GB external for a year, and have experienced some problems with it. Recently I turned it on and it was immediately recognized by my pc (windows xp), but two seconds later it disconnected and was removed from the "my computer" menu. this process of being recognized and then disconnecting repeats indefinitly untill I manualy turn the drive off. My questions:

could this be a hardware problem... possibly a lose connection somewhere? I have tried different cables and the drive runs fine when it is powered up but not connected to any computer. are there any possible hardware problems i'm missing?

If the issue isn't in the hardware, where could it be and how should I go about fixing it? I'm just really confused as to why the drive is recognized and then dissapears.

thank you for the help!

Try connecting it to a different computer, it the problems occurs on a different computer then it is most likely the Simpledrive.
The next thing I would try is to test the power adapter (if it has one and not it is internal) with a multimeter, check the output voltage (the voltage is printed on the label on the adapter) it should be slightly higher than the label's voltage.
Try another compatible adapter and see if this solves your problem.
If it is not hte adapter then it is the USB electronics in the unit is faulty, the hard drive in the unit would be OK.
You could buy a new USB hard drive case adapter and transfer your hard drive to this case and you will have an exernal hard drive again.
OR
Borrow an USB hard drive adapter first to test your hard drive before you buy a new USB hard drive case.

HP windows 8 does not recognize simpleteck hard drive

I purchased a SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx for my Vista machine and all was well. Then I purchased a Windows 7 machine. It would not recognize the devise. I contacted SimpleTech only to be told my model cannot be used on machines newer that the Vista. Recently I purchased a Windows 8.1, did a little research, plugged the SimpleTech into the 8.1 and reformatted it using the Windows feature. The SimpleTech is alive and well on my 8.1.

My computer will not recognize the external harddrive so I can't access it

Connect it to a different computer. If it is not recognized, then it has a problem.
If it is recognized, then your computer has a problem recognizing it.

You may have a power supply that is defective or is failing. Try another power supply, 12V, 2A, center pin positive.

My computer doesn't recognize the SimpleDrive...

Hello jajogeglez,

You may need to use another USB device, be it another flash drive to narrow down if it's just your Simpledrive that's causing this.

You can also update the USB devices under your Device Manger using the CD driver for your motherboard.

Hope this helps.

My SimpleDrive 500GB external hard drive is now only recognized as "USB Mass Storage Device" that I cannot access. I have uninstalled the driver and scanned for the hardware and it reinstalls it as USB...

You can try:
  1. another USB cable
  2. try it on another computer
That will rule out the USB and any software/driver issues on your computer. If it doesnt work after that, there could be a problem with the drive itself

My simpledrive has disappeared and I can't get it to re-mount

have you tried plugging your HD into another computer to see if it has the same problem with another computer?
if the 2nd computer is able to detect your HD, I suggest a backup of your files and format your HD immediately. Your primary computer should be able to detect it then.
A piece of advice: try removing or unplugging your HD once in awhile. External HD is somewhat different from internal HD. :)
