I would check out the Harmony 510 remote control. It may be a little pricey but it is the best universal remote on the market for the money. It also allows you to control your DVD unit as well as your TV without the requirement of selecting which one.Harmony remotes are activity based in the you pick what you want to do such as “Watch TV”, “Watch DVD” , “Watch VCR” etc.. Then It turns the appropriate units on and then sets them to the correct input.Makes it real easy once set up.Another advantage is the IR codes are stored on line and constantly updated so new products and codes can be added. Standards of the signals has changed since I left Germany in '74 but the set you have (you gave no model number) may not be capable of receiving both US and German signals.
These have always been different and from what I just read, they still are in the current era of HD/digital signals which bear no resemblance to the earlier NTSC (US), PAL (Germany) and SECAM (France) signals.
In your case, I would find a buyer for the Avol set (someone still living on- base) and buy one for Germany.
all cable networks have a manual that shows how to us the R/C [remote control] to SCAN ALL model #s of tvs for all the codes. If you don't have the manual, call Comsast Cable & they should be able to help you.
Note: sometimes a cable network cannot control all TV's R/C because some companies BUY off excess tvs and place their name on the brand. You could be buying Zenith, Sony, RCA !! guts with E.I. "superscan" brand on it.
P.S. sometimes the code is just enought to turn the tv on, raise\lower volume.
I own an AVOL 19in TV, I just got my comcast cable hooked up; I too was plagued by initially having to use my other remote to turn TV/volume on/off up/down. Being the code is not listed in the Comcast universal remote instructions, in the above answers someone mentioned APEX as a parent company with AVOL; I was able to use a code from the APEX codes listed in the Comcast universal remote instructions to get the controller to work with turning the TV power on/off and volume control. The code that worked for my particular TV was 10765. Try these codes for your TV to see if they work- 10748, 10879, 10767, 10890. Hope this helps.
