Question about Dell Inspiron 2200 Notebook

3 Answers

Start>Run>now what? Usually under Start, if I select 'Run' a small rectangular box appears. It says Open:___ Then there is a white box. Every time I did this there was something already written in this box. I never noticed what it was. I would just push okay and a screen would appear that listed a bunch of programs (?) running. I'd scroll down till I saw 'wireless internet'. After selecting this a grey box appeared and said that my wireless was stopped. I'd then push a button saying 'start'. This would let my wireless internet work. After that I could get a list of networks and choose from there. I've been having problems fully connecting to my wireless (it always says acquiring address) so I've been fiddling around with stuff. Well, somehow, when I got to Start>Run, the box is blank. I don't know what was there and how to get it back. Now I can't even initiate my wireless. I am clueless here but trying. Thank you!

    Thanks evo725

I tried that and it brought me to a screen I've already been to, but not what I'm looking for.

  • therlihy209 Jan 26, 2009

I see where you're coming from, and I understand all the other steps to get the wireless going, but for some reason I always had to do that, but it worked! I don't understand Run, or where it takes me, but it took me to a screen where wireless was listed and here it would say something about automatic wireless and show that it was stopped and allow me to start it up again. And after that, I'd do all those other things people have been telling me, and I could connect to the internet.

My main question is, what was originally listed under Run, and can I get it back? Are most Dells set on something to begin with? After it disappeared I tried clicking that arrow and a blank white box appeared. My only option was to type in something random or click 'browse' and when i click browse, i have no idea what to look for.

What is that function (Run) usually used for? My friend had showed me how I had to do that so I'm not sure if she typed something in the box that always stayed there. I had assumed it had already been there. It looked like one of those long complicated list of words and symbols (much like this comment ha)

i've done what you explained, but the networks do not show up. when i click on my wireless option It says 'windows cannot configure this wireless connection'. There is no list of networks. BUT I am used to this, this is what always happens. I've been taught that in order to make it so that the networks are listed I have to go to Run, where i select wireless and start it. Ive done it this way on my computer for years and it's worked just fine for me.

Thing is, whatever was listed on Run has disappeared so I cant do this mysterious step that no one seems familiar with.

    I have microsoft windows XP

  • therlihy209 Jan 26, 2009

It was under Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services

This was the window I was looking for. No idea why going through RUN got me there. Thank you everyone for your help anyway!

The run box can be used for several things like getting to DOS or running programs directly from it. Without knowing the name of your program I cannot tell you what was in the box. However, that is ok because that is normally how you start your wireless anyway. You did not mention what operating system you are using (vista vs xp) but it is almost the same process and if you get stuck just reply and it will come directly to me. Click on start>control panel>network connections then right-click on your wireless network connection and it will bring up a either a list of networks (some of those are your neighbors) or your network. Click on connect and you should connect immediately. Be aware that sometimes you will connect to other unsecure networks with a low signal if they are any available. That may be why you are getting a low connect rate. You need to check it each time to ensure it is yours that you are connecting to. Once connected you will see an icon in your lower right taskbar. You can click on that anytime to make sure you are connected to yours. If you have any questions let me know.

Another way to start up your wireless connection utility is to look in your system tray in the far bottom right corner of your screen.  You should see something like four bars like in the cell phone commercial.  Double click that, and you should get the same wireless connection utility up.

Type "taskmgr" without the quotes.  This is probably what you're looking for.

  • Eddie Vev Jan 26, 2009

Or actually, try typing "services.msc" If you want your wireless to stay on all the time, you can right click the wireless service and set it to start automatically.

On the DVD drive door there is a very small rectangular push button. It is about 5/32 inch wide by 3/8 inch long. it may take several several attempts at pushing the button but it should open the drive. If it does not open up the My Computer icon of your computer and left click on the DVD icon. When the drop down box appears select eject and right click on it. That should open your drive. My webcam night mode is turn off how can i turn it back on

Face Recognition Usually you'll find the webcam at the top and middle of the laptop screen. One unique feature included with the webcam on newer Toshiba laptops including the Satellite Pro, Portege and Qosmio models is facial recognition. Instead of having to type in a password when you open the laptop, you can set up the computer to recognize your face and automatically load your settings. b> Setup b> To access the face recognition feature on a Toshiba laptop, open the laptop to the registration screen and click the Face Recognition icon. Look at the circle that appears on the screen and align your face so that it fits within the circle, and then click "Next." At the next page, enter your name and password and click "OK." The next time you use the computer, click on your Face Recognition icon from the main screen and look at the webcam so it can recognize your face and load your settings. b> Night Mode b> If you're in a low-light situation you can take advantage of the webcam's Night Mode effect. To turn it on, open the Camera Assistant by clicking the Start button, and then select "All Programs."

Select the "Camera Assistant" folder and then select the "Camera Assistant" software. Once it's open, hover your mouse over the far left hand side of your laptop screen. This will cause a number of webcam icons to appear. Click the "Properties" icon, which looks like a box with a pen over the top left of the box. Click the "Night Mode" check box from the Properties window and then click "OK." b> Other Profiles b> You can also alter other effects and features of the webcam from the Camera Assistant. First open the Camera Assistant by clicking the Start button, and then select "All Programs." Select the "Camera Assistant" folder and then select the "Camera Assistant" software. Then hover your cursor on the far left of the screen until you see the webcam menu appear, and select the "Properties" icon. Then click on an individual "Profile" tab to adjust the white balance, lower or raise the brightness, or correct the colors. As you click on the adjustment, you should see the change reflected in the way the webcam is displaying on your laptop. When you've selected the settings you want, click "OK" from the Profile window.

The scroll function of the touchscreen isnt

The program is usually Synaptics, look for it in the control panel under your mouse settings. When you are in mouse settings, click hardware and when you see your touchpad device, click properties. go through the setting there and make sure that scrolling is enabled by checking the boxes and there is a box that needs to checked to make sure the icon is in your task bar when windows starts. If these settings cannot be turned on, then go to start button, run, type msconfig in the text box. when the window appears, click on selective start up and go to the startup tab at the top of the window. Look for a listing that is for Synaptics or whatever the touchpad maker is and make sure that is checked to run at startup. To see the listings for all devices on the computer, go to control panel, click on system, click on hardware, click device manager, then click on the plus signs to open all the devices under each header and that gives you the manufacture, driver info, etc. double clicking on any of the devices gives all the properties info as well as enabling devices, uninstalling them if there is a problem, etc.
