SOURCE: My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive.

I had a similar problem with my WD passport 320GB. When I connected it to my laptop it never showed up on My Computer even though the blue light on the hard drive came on.
Here is what I did:  Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" and then "Disk Management",. you should see your WD hard drive listed. then click on "change driver letters and paths"  and change it from the listed to another drive. I changed mine from G to F drive and it worked for me.

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated

My WD 500 GB portable Hard disk is not showing on my computer. Till yesterday it was ok and would show up as soon as i plugged in the usb hub. I tried going to devise management but could find the hard...

depending on a few things
do you hear the drive powering up? like the platters inside are spinning? if so you know that the power to the hard drive is working and the data may be the problem you would want to try new usb cables if those do not work then it would probably be a bad usb port on the hard drive
if you don't hear the platters inside the hard drive spinning up when you plug it in then it sounds like the power is bad on the hard drive or the hard drives cables i would try a new cable first and then if that does not work try contacting WD about a warranty on your hard drive here is a link to WD support page for warranty

hope this helps

Computer not recognising hard drive. I have even looked in disk management and it's not recognised there either. The hard drive is lighting up when connected so it is working.

HI sineadkirk1

There are several reasons why your hard disk can not be recognised by the computer

1> usb cable problem
2> usb port problem
3> the problem on a computer virus or hard disk
4> computer problem
5> hard disk problem

do the test one by one to ensure that the root cause

Hi I have maxtor 1TB external hard drive, not used it for over six month, now when I connect it, nothing happens, my laptop doesn't recognise or even sense/acknowledge it's existence!! Can you help?

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Buy a new W.D. disk-drive through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

Wont recognize usb anymore

if the external hard disk drive powers on, perhaps replacing the USB cable could help ?

i had WD extrenal, and it crapped out on me -- i had so much vital information that i lost . i finally discovered that the power modeul inside the housing that encases the drive was bad.. i coul not get the PC board replaced.

i hope you can resolve this with new USB cable.

have you tried another computer -- see if that PC recognises the WD external drive

let me know how it works out for you

Hi, my WD hard drive is connected to my macbook, but can't access

check under the system profiler which can be found in the applications folder and then in the utilities folder. See if under usb whether the drive is showing under there. If it is, open up disk utility and use the verify disk to see if there is a problem with the drive, if there is use the repair disk to repair it.

Other things to check try a different usb port on the macbook or a different usb cable.

Hope this helps

Laptop suddenly stopped recognising my external USB hard drive

I had the same exact problem with a WD2500xms passport. The problem was the USB cable. I went to the store and bought a 6' USB cable ( $26 at Radio Shack) with the same specs and now, no more problems. Also I called WD technical support (800.275.4932) and asked for a new cable. The WD customer serverice was very helpful and said it would sending me a new cable for free. When it arrives I'll return the 6'er.

Try using a Usb 2 cable "The one that came with the WD My Passport " And put it directly to the PC...
In some cases, Like mine, I used an extended cable + the cable that came with the "WD My Passport" and i got the same problem ..
So i simply removed the extended cable and put the put "WD My Passport " directly to the PC with its own cable and the problem was solved to me ..
