2 Answers

Black screen While trying to download a new XP windows operating system on a Compaq Presario S4020WM,,,the pc froze,,,so it was restarted. Now there is nothing but a black screen. We tried another drive, another cd rom,new memory, another monitor, another power supply...the screen is still solid black,,,,there is no flashing cursor. Do I need to go into the bios and change something. If so,how and what. THANKS for any help.

The fan is definitely running. The cords are good,,hopefully I'll get it to work with another monitor,,it's worth a try. If not maybe it is the CPU.....THANKS,I do appreciate the help.

My next step would be to see if there is a CPU fan and find out if it is spinning.  The problem sounds like a bad CPU, which is usually caused by a bad fan.
Are there any beeps when you try to start it?  If the answer is yes, then it is probably a bad video card or motherboard.
If there are no beeps, spinning fans, or lights turning on, it could be a problem with power.  You changed the power supply, so the next thing to check would be the cables all the way from the wall to the motherboard.  You also should verify that the power switch that is actually built onto the power supply is set to on before you try the other power switch on the front of the computer.

Try hitting F8 repeatedly about once a second immediately after rebooting.  If the problem is a video driver, then you should get a menu that pops up where one of the options is "safe mode."  If you select that, you should be able to finish loading Windows, and then update the video driver.

Ensure that the power button is pressed and the monitor is plugged in correctly. If ok, then the installation was stopped while installing your video drivers. If possible use another monitor to re-load the xp operating system until completed. Once the video monitor drivers are loaded the monitor will work again. Let me know if you have any questions.

Start Normally (black screen with options)keeps re-loading itself

If you can't get into windows normally or into safe mode to try to restore the system back to a date when it worked properly then you'll need to wipe out the hard drive and start the system from scratch.
