Your choices are to replace the drive or purchase an external DVD drive.

Computer BIOS recognizes the SATA DVD Rewriter but Windows XP does not. The drive opens the loading door but it does not appear in the Windows XP explorer (My Computer).

Windows XP doesn't nativey support SATA. Check in BIOS to see if your motherboard supports sata to IDE emulation.

I have a Toshiba L305-s5955 and my dvd drive has disappeared. How do I get it back? Thanks.

If the DVD drive has disappeared in the windows explorer.

Here's the step.

1. Go to Start, on the start search box, type REGEDIT and enter. A registry editor will come up.
2. On the left pane of the window, there are folders.
Open HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/open SYSTEM/open Current Control Set/ open CONTROL/ open CLASS/ open the 4D36E965...folder
3. After opening the 4D36E965, on the right pane of the window, under name look for the lower and upper filter files, or even just one of them and DELETE.
4. Then restart NB to take effect.
5. Check in the windows explorer if the DVD-RW drive is back on the list.
6. Insert a disc to check.

I have a compaq presario cq 60 laptop with Vista - i don't understand how to access the CD-ROM drive - I would normally expect it to appear as an additional drive using the Explore function, but I can't...

Normally it would show up in "my Computer" as a drive, if it is not, then the computer is acting like it is not installed or not enabled. Go to the device manager and look for the dvd drive there and see what the properties say. Put the computer on its back and with a small phillips screwdriver, remove the screw that holds the drive to the motherboard. Now flip the laptop back on its feet and insert an open paperclip into the small hole in the door of the dvd drive bezel, this willphysically trip the door to open. Pull the door and tray out and keep pulling and the rest of the drive will follow. Power up your laptop with the drive missing and access "My Computer" and see if anything changes. Now,power down the laptop, remove the battery....wait 30 seconds and slide the drive in and make sure it seats all the way in, replace the hold down screw, replace the battery and power it up. Let windows recognize the drive and load drivers for it. If it does not read the drive, there may be an issue with either the interface on the drive or the socket on the motherboard.

Will not read any media dsick in DVD combo drive

The disk should actually show up in the My Computer window as a removable drive. Right click on the icon, and select explore.

You should be in the file now.

if it can boot up windows, then the harddisk is not locked(anymore, after entering the correct password),
a slow performance of windows can be sped up by performing a harddisk defragmentation (open windows explorer, right-click onto harddisk, switch to properties,´then 'extras', perform a defragmentation for drive c:, give it time to finish)

to fix the arkward dvd/usb prob:

again open up win explorer and see if cd-rom drive is available, therefore recognized by windows at all.. if yes test-insert Original CD again, see if it can open it(does the CD/DVD-drive LED flash green several times and do you hear any noise from it?)

if not, shut down and enter BIOS while booting hitting either the Del,F1 or F2 button and look if under IDE devices the CD-is recognized by the laptop itself...
if not, set auto detecton for IDE- devices, go
through available menus until u find USB legacy support, enable as well, exit saving changes, reboot.
Again enter BIOS then change
BOOT DEVICE order sothat CD-drive is 1st,
any 3.5'' floppy drive second and harddisk 2nd or 3rd, exit saving changes again.
reboot and let windows come up again. check for cd/dvd-drive again(see procedure as described above), check if windows does recognize your usb-device(mp3 player) now.

if that does not work and during booting you get message'bad CMOS checksum error' you will have replace the CMOS button-battery on
the mainboard, for it may have gone flat...

this means disassembling the laptop
if that is the case, see a technician to work for you or come again with another query.

hope i could be of help

Toshiba DVD not showing up

Does the DVD drive show up in Device Manager under "CD/DVD drives"? It's possible that either the drive is bad ...or maybe there is a bent pin on the connector side preventing it from recognizing the drive. However, that's kind of rare.

If the DVD drive is listed, is there any "splats" or exclamation marks next to it? If so, I'd first try uninstalling the drive and rebooting. Windows *might* be able to properly install the drive. If not, try downloading the drivers (if there are any for Toshiba drives) here.

Worst case scenario ...if it turns out to be a bad drive, you can always just get an external USB drive, and not necessarily have to replace the factoy unit, which can get expensive.

Hope this helps (a little) :)

Try physically removing the player and fire up the laptop. Power down the laptop, replace the player and power back up. If that doesn't help, see if BIOS recognizes it.
If that doesn't work, get back to me.
