My wife's flat iron had an issue with losing power while moving the iron around. I at first thought it was a cord issue, but before tearing into the cord, I disassembled her iron by popping off the two "CHI" covers from either side of the fulcrum. This revealed a screw which when taken out allows you to push the pin out releasing the handle's spring mechanism. Once opened, you can see the power-swivel thing-a-ma-jig and I saw the positive (red) wire had come off of the little flat board mounted on the swivel piece. I simply re-soldered the wire back on to the flat board and BAM! Good as new!

On my chi it was a black and white wire but they had a short before the swival part. you can get a new cord for 15 plus ship but a free fixx is allways good. the black tape isnt too pretty though.

Where did you buy your cord from? Does it have to be a special cord?

Disassemble the straightener, pull out the round plastic piece connected to the circuit board. cut the red and yellow wires off as close to the circuit board as you can, and strip them. cut the power cord directly below the thick, ribbed part. strip the white and black (pos and neg). couple the WHITE TO YELLOW and BLACK TO RED. make sure to test out and make sure the LED comes on. please be careful and don't kill yourself.

seems to me that this was a planned failure.

I could not find a replacement cord either.

I had the same problem with a friend of mines CHI. The probelm was the neatral wire had broken at the bottom of the connector that connects it to the CHI. I cut back some of the rubber to find the actual break, **** spliced the wire back together and then rubber taped and the coated it with regulat vinyl tape, not real pretty, but it works now.

The puppy chewed the cord of our chi. Can I find a replacement cord and repair it myself?

Depending on where your tear is, you can follow just a few steps to help you out. If your tear is a couple inches from either end (like in the middle or close to it) all you need to do is cut out the part that is torn. Once that is done, carefully cut some of the outer plastic back (so that it reveals the actual wires on the inside). Make sure you take that step slow, as to not cut all the way through, just cut through the outer layer. After that, twist the metal wires on the inside together, then cover the exposed metal wires with electrical tape (be generous with the tape so you don't shock yourself in the future. Wrap around 3 to 4+ times)
Tools: Electrical tape Scissors
Hope this helps! :] Good luck!

If you need batteries or PC board, this will raise the price considerably and you may find a less expensive option of buying a replacement. You will also find similar replacement units at shaveroutlet.com

Power cord on flat iron broke

This is a very common problem. Only way to fix it is to replace the cord, which is not all that easy. You'll need TWO regular philips screwdrivers (size #2) plus a couple of little ***** philips screwdrivers. And a soldering iron, solder, and heatshrink.

Start by popping off the two plastic covers on the hinge area. Sometimes they break: they're not really necessary anyway. Use the two screwdrivers on the screws on each side of the hinge: one will eventually come loose. Take the screw out, then use a screwdriver to push out the hinge pin. Keep track of any washers that might fall out. Carefully remove the big spring, and lay the two halves of the iron out flat. On the control side, there are several screws that hold the covers on: remove those carefully. If the cord is the kind with the swivel thing, you'll have to take out all of those parts. There will be two wires going from the cord into the circuit board: sometimes they are attached with tiny screws, sometimes they are soldered. You have to solder a new cord onto those wires.

You can buy replacement cords at most hardware stores, or steal a power cord off another (broken) appliance. Two-wire cord is preferred: flat irons don't use a ground wire.

Cut the power wires in the flat iron: they are usually blue and brown. Brown goes to the black wire on your replacement cord, blue goes to white. Strip the wires carefully, slip the heatshrink on, solder, then slip the heatshrink over the repair and heat it to seal it up.

Now the hard part is trying to secure the new cord, since it doesn't fit the way the old one did. I usually put a big zip-tie on the cord, which is then captured when you put the covers back on.

Once the cord is repaired, you can re-install the covers. Don't tighten the screws too much, they are really easy to strip out. Carefully insert the legs of the spring into each half of the iron, then hold them together while you slip the hinge pin back in: it's a little tricky. Then use the two screwdrivers again, this time to tighten the screws. If the plastic covers aren't broken you can snap them back in if you want.

See? I told you it's not that simple. But since a new iron is, what, $100, it's worth a try.

Good Luck!

CHI Flat Iron GF-1001

I have bought thermal fuses from DigiKey. They have various temperature ratings. If you have a multimeter or ohmmeter you can check to see if the fuse still has continuity. If the iron sometimes works, it's not the fuse. Cords are the most common problem, but if it was plugged into a 220V I'm not sure what might have gotten fried. There is a small IC in there too, for temp control or something: if it's fried you are SOL. Save it for parts though...

I know how to get to the cord but where do you get a replacement from?
To get to the cord, remove the round things on the side and unscrew the screw underneath.
